Watkins & Shepard has bad safety scores

    I've received great advice from this website, and learned much from reading the different threads. Thank goodness for the drivers that share their knowledge on TTR! I want to pay it forward. So with what I've learned in researching different companies...I do want to pass this info along to others who may not be aware or know that this info is out there.

    I've been researching W&S for a couple of months now, and it has all been positive, good stuff. My hubby even talked with a fleet manager who gave us very helpful information. They sound like a great company. I could not find any negative info about them... until now.

    Today I pulled up their safety scores after someone on TTR mentioned it.... wow... was I surprised! Their scores are pretty rough...and there's a trend going back a couple of years.

    Now, I'm not knocking W&S, just stating the facts and passing it along to anyone who is researching this company. I wish I would have known this two months ago.

    With that said, please understand that some drivers care about company safety scores, some don't. If you are interested, here is the link to their FMCSA score sheet:

    W&S has these yellow icons in three categories!!! Do you think your gonna have a target on your back with the DOT??? You better believe it. However, if your a good driver that has your act together, that doesn't mind being inspected frequently, what's the big deal? Personally, the less I have to deal with the po-po..the better!



    I posted a question about these scores asking if I should avoid this company because everything else I can find about them is good, how important should these scores be to a potential driver???

    That's 15 minutes if they don't snap on the rubber gloves and get all proctologist on you. I've driven for a company that had bad CSA scores with an owner that was actively shuttling trucks between 4 different companies to try and stay one step ahead. It isn't pretty. Even with a PrePass it was rolling the dice every time we ran by a scale, and New Mexico and Arizona both made sure at least one of them pulled us in for an inspection every other trip.

    You want to drive for a company that has a high equipment OOS incident rate? Then plan on being your own mechanic to keep the tractor and trailer in compliance or losing loads because you refuse to move.

    Compared to what, and how? To derive some conclusion from a single weighted score alone w/o a stitch of analysis or comparison is a "woefully insufficient evidence" mistake. You have no idea which or how many equipment violations were committed by O/Os responsible for their own maintenance, and scores do not distinguish between driver inspection/company maintenance errors, ad infinitum.

    Your opinion is not necessarily "fact".

    Which large carriers have not been/aren't, and what does that really mean, in FMCSA-ese? You don't know, but are apparently satisfied.

    That makes no sense. If you were driving for a marginal company, would you not welcome DOT scrutiny? Who do you think would be better at inspecting your rig; you, or someone with far more training and experience than yourself?

    How did you learn it's not about safety? Suppose you were a DOT official, is that how you'd look at it...? That must be some school you're attending, you've already got the victim mentality of a steering agent down pat, but it's probably unfair to not assume you arrived toting that.

    The DOT you run into as a truck driver are your friends, and largely driver-friendly. I know if I had a cracked frame and missed it, I'd want ANYBODY to find it before it broke. Which brings up another point; you don't know a cracked frame can be nearly impossible to detect before it breaks.

    You got that part right. And "good drivers" wish for more DOT scrutiny, and greater standards (HOS excepted). Fewer steering agents means greater demand for drivers/more money/greater safety.

    The Dunning-Kruger effect seems to be preventing you from recognizing that you lack sufficient expertise to distinguish great feedback from the not-so-great, or to interpret FMCSA score sheets.

    I'd rather drive for a company with well maintained equipment.

    While you seem to indicate that the DOT and state inspectors are "your friend", I would beg to differ after getting an OOS because of faulty equipment. If a company has a high CSA score related to OOS equipment, then that is a red flag. Your own CSA score will suffer in addition to the company's CSA score.

    By the way, you are aware that Dunning and Kruger were awarded the 2000 Ig Noble prize?

    I prefer to drive for the very best company I can find.

    Keeping a clean CSA record is a priority for me. I do not consider DOT to be my friend.

    It is easy to recognize all the red flags from the report, whether the problems stem from O/O drivers or company drivers....there's most certainly some issues going on that have not been fixed.

    By all means go drive for someone else....means more loads for me! W/S has taken several steps to rectify the issues to include the termination of the Safety Manager and 50+ drivers. There is also a ZERO tolerance for willful logbook violations.

    Oh and btw...we don't have fleet managers.

    That's sounds great, I'm glad to hear they are taking big steps to straighten things out. We like everything we have learned about W&S except for the safety scores.

    If you're looking for a perfect trucking company you won't find it. Just keep an eye on your equipment and be proactive in getting things fixed and you'll be ok. I'd go with W/S any day over the mega bottom feeders.
