I ran with Werner/Family Dollar for about 10months, Worked my behind OFF, talk about using your 14 hour clock. I ran down my clock down to Zero minutes left. I ran 5 loads a week, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Norfolk area New jersey you name it. I dont think i would of gained the experience I did running dedicated, if i would of been OTR. Plus the pay was great and i was home every weekend. Didnt matter though wife rode in the truck with me. FYI I left because of family issues at home.

I am in training with a man on the family dollar account and let me tell you if I can make it through the training and learn to back a trailer into the spots he has to then I will be able to drive and back any where. LOL Alot of the driving is small back roads in little middle of no where places. As for docks they are very few and far between. Yes we unload the truck but I figure its just a good way to get a bit of exercise and he does make good money. He does about 3 runs with two stops a week and makes about $1200 a week and is home every weekend. So for that kind of money and home time I don't think haveing to unload a trailer is a bad deal.

If you can make it through the 300 hours of training you can make it at Werner. As for the dedicated if you can get on the FD acct even better. I liked that I was home every weekend and never sat at a truck stop for more than 10 hours. Plus the pay was awesome and you dictate how much you make by how many loads you take a week. I ran out of front royal va

The trainers well it depends. There are those that all they want you to do is drive so they make money. Then those that are a nightmare. And then those that actually care. Its just luck of the draw but remember you have a choice, its your career on the line and if there are any issues that cannot be resovled with your trainer dont be afraid to call your SDM.

    To airdrop:

So, could you tell me a bit more about your downtime at truckstops? And in general your typical schedule doing this account? i'm thinking of going OTR(i'm regional/local now) and i know people bust on werner all the time but i figure if it's steady work and decent pay then it's still worth considering, for me, at least.

i actually did a family dollar run out of the charlotte DC when i first started driving. And yes, if you're a beginner, this may not be the best way to start due to the tightness of a lot of these store's parking lots. If, however, anyone who is a beginner does decide to start driving AND take this as a dedicated run, then i would suggest TAKING YOUR TIME when you get to the store---i mean you're already there, so taking a few extra mins to get backed in safe is not going to waste that much time. And G.O.A.L.---get out and look---ALOT. Overdo it, to the point that the customers get impatient with you. But screw em, it's your career.

So, anyways, if i could handle it back then, then i'm pretty sure i could handle it now as far as the unloading is concerned. And back then i didn't use rollers---they just handed me a hand truck at each store. And i had to bring everthing to the back of the trailer.

The reason why i wanted to know more about the downtime situation was that i'm thinking of going OTR, but i want to go OTR more for the adventure than the money; i want to be able to have periods of downtime where i can read/watch tv/internet in the sleeper. Explore the local areas that i happen to be in either by jogging or bicycle etc. i want to be able to have maybe 3-4 hours free downtime every 3 or 4 days or so. But with this type of account, it doesn't sound like the best scenario because it sounds like hustle and bustle? Not that there's anything wrong with constant work, if that's what you're into.

Also, can i ask if you live/d near front royal, or did you just run out of there?

When you got empty, did you pickup a "backhaul," or did you just return back to the DC?
