I thought you know all about this type of gig? People did give their opinions that you choose to refute and ignore. So all I can say is go for it and keep us posted on how it goes!

Garlic - my original response was stating pay scale & rates that were discussed with my husband's uncle with a Werner driver familiar with that account while they were both at a truck stop awhile back. In no way was I being condescending towards Werner, FD and/or your choice to hire on with this company.

You posted your situation, gave your inquiry for further details and you're jumping up & down when others give their opinion? Why bother posting in the first place?

    Hey everyone,

I think Garlic wanted to know from a driver who actually is doing this job right now and could provide FACTS, as opposed to truck stop rumors. Now, non of these posts are from such driver, so why all the bashing? He already knows it is a hard work that is not what he was asking about. If you want to tell how ###### Werner is then go to the Bad Trucking Companies link and went there. It's just ridiculous that a person wants to get a reliable info and instead gets a load of BS back instead of the answer he needed. By the way I used to pull dollar general loads for werner and it is a hard work and I assume Family dollar is even harder cuz you have to fingerprint every item, however some people don't mind working hard ( including myself and apparently Garlic)and getting a paycheck around $800-1000 on average and home for a full weekend instead of only 34 hrs. It is better than $6 or 700 plus it keeps the driver in good shape. As for how safe it is, you can make it safe or you can't.
that is my .02, and by no means I intended to bash on anyone.
    Drive safe

What kind of pay does the DG account have? I`m going to ATl. for orientation and then to Bessemer,Al to train on the DG account.I`m willing to pay my dues so i`m going to do it.

Well i been doing it since september of 12. And it not real easy and it isnt hard either. U would become a better driver as far as backing up and trip planning since u have to plan ur stops and where u can shutdown at. And if u do good week. Then yea u will make do less miles then OTR drivers but whrn u look at ur check and find out u brake a grand week and get to come just about every weekend. It worth it to some of us. Some drivers can do it some drvers cant. But it is a good way to stay fit and have better health conditions. It just my .02 cents of my account.

I did the family dollar account for a couple months back in early 2012 out of West Memphis. You get paid the 85 (Or 65 cant remember) for the trailer empty, 15 a stop, and hourly pay for the unload (Check your driver handbook). I did three loads a week, grossed nearly a grand a week but busted my butt for it. If the store is slow to unload, the rollers will get backed up and it will take forever. You will end up 34 resetting in a parking lot if you arnt careful about your time because the unload is done on line 4 and you can burn through your 70 pretty quick.

On time is crucial. You get an on time bonus each week added to your mileage, and if you are so much as 5-10 min late, you lose it.

Its a good way to have pretty steady money each week, like I said I was grossing between 850 and a grand. Its also a good way to save money on food, shopping in the family dollar after you get done, restock the truck . Pace yourself on the unload, drink plenty of water, and be careful of falling canned goods since sometimes it seems like they load the trailers with a snow blower.

I use to do Family Dollar for Werner. It is hard work, but good money. I made .32 a mile plus the unload pay. If you dont mind hard work its a good account to get on.

im actually gonna do this is my new job the dedicated family dollar account. I start orientation tomorrow. I just got my CDL at first I didn't approve of it because of the unloading but when my recruiter told me $52K my first year and told me ill be getting paid to unload and all stops. I automatically told him that's more then the starting off OTR drivers my recruiter said it yeah that's more then the starting off OTR driver. and ill be home to my daughter I just had 1/11 on nearly after the weekends so I said yes ill definitely do it then. I worked as a unloader and at my job im leaving now long as nobody aint coming in my truck and bother me I can unload about 6 trucks in a 8 hour time frame *depending on the freight* I told them long as im unloading my truck and only my truck completely fine with the unloading I prefer to stay in shape anyway

52k sounds about right. Just understand you are unloading floor loaded merchandise not pure freight. Dogfood to tiny candles and everything in between all by hand with the only equipment being your rollers. And if the store workers are slow to unload the roller then it will take forever. And you are not bumping a dock for your unloads. It's being sent through a back door. Go to a local family dollar store when they have a truck and see what it is to get a better idea before you go. Good luck! It's good money but hard hard frustrating work.
