So here they are: 1st Is it true that Werner is now making all drivers sit during any and all holidays? They can not go anywhere major or minor ones even like presidents day.
Also, as I brows the boards, I see all sorts of jobs for people starting out in trucking and people who have been with it a while, too people needing to get loads out. Yet, I have been told that freight is slow right now. It is the start of July, I would think fireworks alone would be hauled.
Lastly, how often does Werner make you shell out for lumpers? I thought that most times they sent a check to the sight for them and it was rare for the driver to shell out cash to one.
:biggrin_25510: I ask all this because live with a person who splits the rent and I seems to have no income at all. I also know they are major lair and I am not wanting to carry them for much longer and get a new room mate.
    Thanks Guys.:biggrin_25519:

Had a Werner recruiter come to the school yesterday... is a driver/recruiter, so he does have an idea what he's talking about.
Seems they "have" a lot of freight and have to off load some to to other companies... not sure WHAT kind of freight, but they were "overbooked"..kinda like the airlines.., I guess!

At least in Texas, they're offering a $2500 bonus for Dollar General acct drivers. Says it's hard work and will be very hot in the trailers, not an easy job. Bonus only good until they have enuf drivers, whenever that'll be...( I'll pass on that job!.....<G>)

He also said that you can't sit around and wait when you get loads, you do have to learn how to efficiently plan, especially with the new HOS rules.

He also said that yeah, Werner will lease trucks, but in his opinion it's a bad idea, simply because the profit margins are now so low.
Oh, also that they're pretty lenient in their hiring right now since they are short so many drivers. He didn't say what areas they're short in, but did say they never have enough OTR solo drivers. and Dollar General, they're short those.

That's all the info I have, sorry.
    Good luck,
    Mary

I worked for Werner for one month...They did not treat me bad, but they did have some of the most unfriendly employees I have ever worked with, Other Werner drivers would not engage in any type of conversation at terminals or truckstops.

I worked for the Family Dollar account and that was extremely hot and hard work and you do have to be Johnny on the spot when it comes to backing.

    The pay was low.

Werner is generally short on Dollar General and Family Dollar account drivers due to the fact those accounts make up a hefty percentage of Werner's hurt and "light duty" driver roster....to put it simply, those accounts are dangerous!! Dollar General especially, since those driver get to unload "rolltainers", which are badly loaded, top heavy, and badly designed cages of freight filled with all sorts of product. the heaviest product is typically at the top, just primed to falling out and crushing a foot or breaking a collar bone.

Seriously, next time anyone's at a Werner terminal, look for the poor schmuck doing "light duty" (like checking permit books) and asked what happened. Dollars to donuts, that's a Dollar General driver who got hurt while unloading freight.

Most drivers, not all, but most, driving for the mega carriers, can't afford an apartment. Most would be homeless due to finances unless their spouse has a fairly decent job. There's a few good mega's out there where drivers get good paychecks, but most mega's don't have the miles for solo drivers.

I drove for Werner for 3 yrs.If you choose the OTR division, freight will be slow the entire time with them. When companies say freight is slow, don't believe them.Reason drivers don't get the miles is because they hire too many drivers. So the next time a company tells you freight is slow, tell them to quit hiring so many drivers then we woul have freight.Who told you Werner is making the driers sit Holidays? That's a new one.

Considering this person went from making $400. to 600 a week to $100 to $125. because they say that they have no loads and are now being made to not drive during any holiday's, even Presidents day, then to add in lumper fee's. I am having a hard time with some of this.
Please address the holiday's and lumper fee's and why they went from the one amount to very little.
I remember them saying that on the lumper fee a while back that it was some sort of thing where the company used their id and truck number then wired a check to the company for the lumper.
    Thanks again.

I never had to deal with lumpers when I was with Werner, but MOST companies give the drivers a comdata check and that covers the lumper. All the companies I have ever worked for did not make the drivers pay for lumpers out of pocket, and if they ever would have, unless they state lumpers not authorized, will reimberse that expense. I have to agree with Patty, who said they sit during holidays. Companies want their trucks moving as much as the driver wants to be moving, if those wheels aren't turning, they aren't earning.

I think your roomie is feeding you a sewage like substance....just saying.

It is unlawful under the FLSA for a trucking company to require its employee to pay for a lumper when the lumper is clearly being used for the benefit of the employer. Industry practice or not, its not legal.
