I'm going to be starting my career as a truck driver soon and Werner is one of the companies that I'm considering.
Werner has caught my eye for a few reasons; they have a terminal in Dallas somewhat close to where most of my family lives, they have a pet policy with no weight restriction, and they hire new drivers.

    My questions are:
-Do you get assigned a trainer quickly?

-How long did it take you to finish your 275 hours? Did you feel sufficiently trained after you had completed your hours?

-During training were you ever able to make it home, or do you get put up in a motel when your trainer goes home? Not too worried about this because I don't have a wife or kids, just curious.

-Once you get out on your own, are you able to bring a pet right away?

-Is there any fine print about their pet policy?

I know Werner doesn't have a great reputation, but I am going to be fresh out of CDL school and I'll have to pay my dues somewhere. I know the pay won't be great, I can deal with that while I'm still wet behind the ears. If I'm able to bring my best friend along I can deal with anything. He's well trained, smart, and I keep him well groomed, so I can't see why there would be any unexpected problems.

Thanks to anyone who can help me out with these inquires!

There are no dues to pay; you can start out with a top notch company right out of school.

These companies hire in Dallas and have pet policy unless their pet policy has changed; make some phone calls:

    Melton Truck Lines
    CTL Transportation
    USX
    Navajo
    H.O. Wolding
    WEL

    and many others.

Wow, thanks. I guess I've really been led astray with what I have read.
I'll have the phone glued to my ear tomorrow!

I am with Werner and I am pleased with them.. they have a lot of resources and support to help new drivers..

How long it takes to get a trainer depends on various things... o e good thing about werner is that you are paid u our graining wage while waiting for a trainer... $400 a week.. if you are a female and want a female trainer it may take lo ger, same as if you want a non smoking trainer...

How long it takes to complete your training also varies.. if your trainer ks on a dedicated account and home on weekends.. then you will be in a hotel and it will dragout your training

I don't know of any company that will weigh a dog; wait until you get your truck then swing by the house or have a family member meet you somewhere with the pup.

Dont do it that way if you are with werner.. there are policies and procedures to folllw... one, your pet nas to be current on all shots and such, there is also a pet deposit and paper work you have to fill out and sign..

If you just bring your pet without going through the proper procedure you could be terminated... happened to one driver, they had to take their truck in to tne shop, had their dog with them, got terminated....

You are just sarting a job or career however you want to look at It why jeopardize it... just follow the proper procedure and it will be fine...

As far as hometime during training.... yes it is possible but a couple things to consider...

If your trainer goes home yoh will be cnecked into a hotel near where the trainer lives, if yoj happen to live close enough to tne trainers home you would. E able to go home..

You can request and get hometime during training but you lose your $500 bonus..

Aftet training, you are assigned a truck and hour first load, you deliver the load and then take the truck home for your hometime

I can only speak for Werner, thats who I drive for. Don't believe all the negative things you hear about them. It's like anything else it's what you make of it. I was talking to a driver last week at a shipper who walked over to my truck just to tell me how bad Werner sucked. He had driven for them for about a month and quit. As the conversation progressed I found out he was on his forth company in 2 years which was Melton and he was about to quit them. I am on the dedicated Walmart account I stay out a month at a time. They leave me alone I rarely speak to my dispatch. When I pick up one load they pre assign me the next one. I always get 3000 miles a week usually a little more. I live 15 minutes from a Walmart DC, when I go home I bobtail park in the drive way until I leave out again. As long as you deliver on time and do your part it has been my experience Werner leaves you alone and lets you run.
