I did something stupid that I know better... I was pushing the limits on my 14 hour.. absolutely dumb I know... and this is one reasson why...

So, I pull up truck stops on my GPS.. I have 29 minutes of HOS left, but wanted to at least get to I 29 North.. I knew I couldn't make it to the Loves at exit 44.... and I have been on this kick of checking out the smaller lmom and pop truck stops.. so, I choose one that I never been too and knew I was cutting it close... well, rolled past a rest area with space, abd a schell... and got to my ch I sen truck stop exit with only 6 minutes of my 14 left...

As I rolled up the exit ramp.. I seea truck leaving... first thought.. oh crap.. hope there is a space... then as I pulled in.. I see plenty of spaces... as there was not another truck there... I thought it was wierd... but, oh well.. only have 4 minutes of HOS now... so I park , set my breaks and attend to my qualcomm.. log off duty...

That is when I am startled by this friggin guy who jumped up on my driver door step...

Wierd crazy guy.. wanted me to take him to California... not going that way get the hell offmy truck... well take me where4 your going... cant company policy, get iff my truck..

My window was part way down.. so he had his hands in it.. I rolled it up... left him jusg enough to get his hand out... then iopenedmy door pushing him backwards and shut it again...

Now, I have no time left on my HOS.... crap..

Sent a free form message to dispatch... at a funky wierd truck stop.. crazy guy.. out of hours

Immediately I get a message. ?. You okay fot personal drive time.. getsomewhere safe.. letme know when you get there..

So, I roll out and down to ferris truck stop. And park.. message dispatch.... thanks at a better lplace now..
Get back.. no problem, your safety is number1 priority, glad your somewhere safe have a good night..

I know better than to rjun my hours down like that... and I learned if there are no other trucks at a truck stop, there is probably a reason why and just roll on by...

    Jokingypsy and bigwallmike Thank this.

Well if you weren't driving then technically you should be OK. As long as you're not driving, that's the key.

TECHNICALLY, personal drive time has to be bobtail according to the FMCSR. But I won't tell :biggrin_25523:

Yeah.. not gonna get myself in that jam again...

I like trying out the smaller truck stops.. after awhile all the Loves, Pilots, fkying js and such are all the same ... so it is nice to find a new place... I dont know if that one is always funky.. or just a bad night anx that is why there were no other trucks... I will look, from the road as I pace and see if there are ever trucks there..

It doesn't specify bobtail.. it says unladen.. which is a move without compensation. . So if you're dragging an empty trailer and not receiving compensation. . You are unladen.

i liked the truck stop at exit 47 near Palisade, CO...just east of Grand Junction on I-70 about 12-15 miles. nice and quiet, good mom and pop restaurant there. no drama, clean, fresh mountain air, lots of stars to look at.
