Anyone from western (past or present) wanna share their "story" as to what made them have to choose western? and whether you're on the van side or flatbed side........Just trying to pass a lil time,(plus its dead in here) and see where "I" stack up on the "bad choices we make" list lol

I've seen you around before there, truckerman.
What happened? Why are you sitting in a Cascadia, again?

they choose western because they made bad decisions in the past like get fired because you hit a bridge, you were charged with felony, aggravated assault, drug charges, following too close, improper lane change, unsafe driving, careless driving if you have any of these where no ones will hire you then you go to western nd trust me im scared of all of them because they are ex- felons nd i always think they can do anything stupid nd if i was a cop i wouldn't stop no danm western driver because they are scary lol

You should tell your story because you are a western driver.

No, not true. You can also end up working at places like Western Express if you have a gap in your truck driving 'career'. It doesn't have to be safety or license related. Few companies will talk to you, regardless of how much experience you have, if you have gap in driving employment more than 6-12 months.

June 2012 I was approaching my 3rd yr with PAM and had just gotten a brand new 2013 Prostar the previous month.

Got a load going to Richmond, KY but they could not get me directions to the consignee (3 requests). So I used my laptop with Google maps to determine a route, then crosschecked it against the MC Atlas for restrictions.....none noted.

Just after I turned off KY 627 onto KY 388/Boonesborough Rd, I spotted the sign denoting CLEARANCE 11' 6" SIX MILES AHEAD.

Knowing I couldn't go that way, I immediately started looking for a place to turn around. Couldn't use the parking lot at Boonesborough State Park because they were in the process of repaving it, so had it blocked off.

Finally found a place about 4mi down the road and turned around to get back to KY 627.

Just before I got back to the Boonesborough State Park entrance, a dumptruck came arounf the curve on this two laned, no shoulder road way over the center line.

I inched over as far as I could without going off the pavement to miss the dumptruck, but a treelimb clipped the top right corner of the trailer, and fell onto the road. The dump driver didn't stop, and luckily no one was hit by the treelimb.

I pulled it off the road, took some pics of the damage, and got back on KY 627 to go over to I-75 and find a route from there to make delivery (trailer was afterwards dropped off at repair facility after making reporting to Accidents Dept).

About 3 weeks later I'm instructed to meet with Safety at the Laredo Yard. I'm made to watch some videos, then placed on 3 mos probation - for not running head on into a dump truck that was over the centerline. And I made sure to write in the "How could you have avoided this incident" box that I should have just stopped the truck until ONE of the 150 folks at the terminal could have taken the time to find me an actual route.

Couple of months later (Aug 2011) I picked up a trailer at the Whites Creek drop yard going down to Saturn plant in Spring Hill.

Did my hookup with window open to hear the engagement...did my tug test...hooked up my airlines...looked underneath thru the throat of 5th wheel to make sure latch was engaged...cranked up landing gear...did my walk around to check lights, tires, etc...then did a rolling tug test at 5mph. Everything was fine.

Come all the way out of the rocky, uneven yard (appx 1/2mi) and as I turn onto Old Hickory Blvd the 5th wheel fails - dropping the trailer. Luckily it was just empty racks aboard so the landing gear didn't collapse/break. Called Road Rescue and they got a crane to life it up so I could get back under it.

Twelve days later, they have me come from my home in Clarksville to the Whites Creek yard and hook up to an empty trailer, then call in.

When I call, they put me on a conference call with the Safety Dept...to inform me that I am being terminated immediately - because of excessive safety issues. I'd had no moving violations, 6 good DOT inspections, and had gotten safety bonuses for the preceding 12 months.

Spent the next three days making calls to Fleet Mgr, Safety Mgr, Driver Liaison to try and set up an appeal - and to top it off, I was denied unemployment by Arkansas even after presenting my case - which included copies of the Driver Handbook section on trailer hookups...which did not include a visual inspection of 5th wheel throat or the rolling tug test.

So after 3mos of unemployment and no responses to applications, Western Express finally called.

Had to take it to avoid greater financial problems.
