So I'm 21 years old, got my CDL license back in June but got a factory job shortly after so I have absolutely zero driving experience outside of trucking school. I've recently been laid off from that job and have decided to finally pursue a trucking career literally a few hours ago. For a while I got the idea that it wasn't worth it and I strayed away from the idea of starting a driving career. But after realizing that there are no jobs in my small town besides fast food, I'm taking the leap. The only 2 companies I've applied to at the moment are Western Express and CR England. I've applied to these 2 because they both offer Refresher Courses which I'm sure I need after not driving for 9 months. I'm going to call both companies tomorrow and see what's up.

I saw an ad for Western Express saying that they now hire 21 year olds, I know it used to be 22 year requirement. They state they give roughly a week long refresher course and then send you out with a trainer.

I'm anxious to know how that refresher course works. Do you get paid during this refresher course? If not can you take any kind of pay advances during it? Where do they conduct it at? I live in Maryland so where would I be going for orientation, TN?

Also, I'm more interested in flatbed than van. How physically difficult is the flatbed training? I'm 21, but I'm a tall skinny guy. Honestly I'd say I'm a little on the weak side if you ask me, how heavy are the tarps and stuff?

How would my home time be as a flatbed driver living in Maryland?

    Is this a joke???

You have 53 posts, yet apparently you've spent NO time at looking at either the Western Express thread or the CR England thread. Good luck. And, go with Western.....I hear they pay $100 a day for training.

No it's not a joke. I never bothered looking at Western before now because they used to have the 22 year old age requirement like I said. No reason to look into to them when I couldn't work for them I thought.

hello I am working for western for the last 6 months and they have a very bad accident rate very bad CSA scores like 96 jn all the departments. So far since Jan 16 rollovers. Low pay if you do go there go flatbed, they at least leave the east coast, van div. is all east coast. Please look at other company's if you can. They will also charge you 500.00 for any type of accident ,and it just goes on,im am leaving this week.Need to get paid more and get off the east coast. also you will pull a lot of water at 46680lbs and a lot of paper, and garbage to the land fills, wish you the best, like I said I think flatbed is better, but it don't change there CSA scores and thry had there Pre-Pass revoked from DOT so you will get pulled in a lot,and thr trucks are in bad condition unless you get one of the new automatics, trls the worst

you've got time now.....go look at both. Then look at Maverick or TMC. As far as a refresher goes, you can probably go to your local community college or tech school and get it....just gotta pay out of your pocket

Have looked at both now. TMC requires 23 years old. Can't afford to pay for a refresher out of pocket at the moment, and my driving school I went to doesn't do them anyways.

Go with Western Express is you want flatbed.
The accidents and rollovers are drivers doing it; too fast for conditions.
The refresher is free is you stay 9 months.

Look at it this way; it's a stepping stone to help you reach your goal. Sometimes the path is rocky but if you're determined it will pay off in the big picture.

and to piggyback what chinatown said:

if you read the various threads in here on the subject (western exp) you'll atleast be "prepared" for what you are going to encounter there, be careful and good luck
