A driver that posts on here, goes by "bubbaray" was in your situation. He went with Western Express and had a rough time the first 2 weeks with a jerk trainer. He punched out the trainer and Western gave him a new trainer. His refresher is over now and he's sticking with Western Express; says now that he's solo he's doing real good. Dispatcher keeps him running.

Ok, thanks to everybody who responded. I'm not being picky if anybody is suggesting that, I've tried everywhere I can think of in my area, including fast food joints such as McDonalds, Wendys, Burger King. I've had a few interviews but never got further than that. I live in a small town in western MD in the mountains where unless you're a mechanic of some sort, you're going to either work fast food or have to leave the area, unless you get really lucky otherwise ( like I did with my previous job ). Maybe I can't seem to get past interviews ( the few I've had ) because I've been unemployed for going on 7 months now, so employers think there's something wrong with me, I don't know really.

Think I'm going to submit an application for Western here in a few minutes, really no other choice to be honest. I'm kind of a go with the flow kinda guy so I don't get ticked off over the tiny things, hopefully that's where a lot of the negative talk towards Western comes from, tiny things.

well, you wouldn't be the first one who was brought into trucking because they "had no other choice".
Maybe you'll get lucky and like it......probably won't though.

Man......we're behind Wendy's, McDonalds, and Burger King?? Sounds about right, though..........

Hey, don't throw me in that briar patch!!!!!! hehehehehehe

Actually going to wait another day or so before filling out application. My brother just got me a, well a driving interview if that's what you want to call it with a guy he knows who owns/runs a few tri-axle dumptrucks. The guy has an empty truck he's looking to put someone in so he wants me to go with him on a few runs tomorrow. Wish me luck.

I also noticed you said you were 21....don't most of these companies require a minimum age of 22?

Western Express will pay a brand new driver $.27 for flatbed .
If you are a refresher $.01 of that rate per mile goes to them to repay the refresher training.

That puts you at $.26 cpm for 9 months.

A brand new dry van driver at Western Express gets $.26

Western Express recently lowered their age requirement from 22 to 21. It still says you need to be 22 on most of their links on the internet but a few will say 21, but I called and asked multiple recruiters and a recruiter manager there and they all said it's 21 now for Western.

Well regarding my post a few above this one about going out on a few runs in a dumptruck with a guy my bro hooked me up with, I'm going to pass on him. He wanted me to wait around until the winter time and run one of his plow trucks, which is only when it snows obviously. Also, I have NEVER been so distracted with driving in my life.

The guy knew I haven't driven any type of commercial vehicle in over a year and he said he would train me and give me experience. This dude had the CB blaring at what seemed like max volume, the speaker for the freaking thing was right beside the driver side, so it was blaring in my left ear all dang day. He fell asleep multiple times, talked on the CB about gossip/bs, talked on his cell phone and CB at same time, radio on. Hell he didn't even know the shift pattern of his own truck. It was an 8 speed, first time I've driven one, the trucking school was a 10 speed, but they're pretty much the same. He made me come to a COMPLETE STOP in the middle of the road because he didn't know the shift pattern and thought I was trying to skip like 2 gears. I was in 4th gear, flipped the range selector up for the high side to go up to 5th gear, but he thought I was in 2nd gear trying to go back up into 1st with the range selector up. Dude drove me crazy.

I just filled out an application for Knight Transportation, I think they have a refresher course where they actually pay you some while taking it unlike at Western. Probably try to get a hold of a Knight recruiter tomorrow and see.

Western or Knight, whatever it takes to get rolling. Travel the USA and maybe find a better location to live where the weather is better and more jobs available. Which ever company will give you a chance, just take it and get it done, then move on later if you wish.
