I know Western is looked down on. It is a means to an end. The pay is the lowest in the industry. Equipment for new drivers is bad. ( they have nice equipment and you may even see it but you won't get near it unless you're a female). Home time does not exist. They will tell you to run when you know the roads are closed. However, if you can gut it out and get some time, 6 months at least, a year is better, there are good jobs to be had. I signed on last week with a small company. I deal with the owners not some "manager" . I have a new truck and make twice what I made at WE.

I'm grateful WE hires and trains otherwise I wouldn't be where I am now.

I like your old post from August with Western Express:

Just another quick update. I hit the ground running Thursday. Knoxville terminal to near Jackson MS. From there to Henderson NV. Tonight I'm cooling my heels north of Bakersfield CA. Not all of it has been positive. What job is? Since Thursday afternoon I've been behind the wheel for close to a thousand miles. I don't see any reason why I can't make a living here. I'm in a new Volvo. It is plenty strong and comfortable. Sure, I could whine about dispatch, maintenance, general lack of give-a-#### and plenty more. I'd rather run safe mile and take care of my family.

While I'm thinking about it, Advanced Trucking Institute in Asheville deserves a shout-out. Joe and Tony do a good job. I'd recommend them with no hesitation.

You got off to a good start anyway.

You didn't buy one of those "dollar trucks" did you? :???: I went with a truck school buddy in 1983.. Had no idea what I was getting in to... my buddy leaped at the deal.. I told em "No Thanks".. got on the bus in Ft.Scott and went back to CA... at that point it was 6.5 cpm to 13 cpm and those darling 50' trailers. Glad to see someone remembers them.

I made 8.5 cpm there. Yes, I took a dollar truck but only stayed there a few months until I could find something better with no experience. Started mailing those applications from the magazines at the truck stops. Pro-craft boat company called me and said they would hire me and to get there as quickly as possible. Took the dollar truck and load of cat litter to the Chattanooga terminal and said goodbye! Hauled boats from the factory, 48 states, for a year then went to flatbeds with ExpressCo. Liked ExpressCo; running dirty coast to coast, two or 3 logbooks. Made good money. The guy that owned ExpressCo also started......Western Express! Never worked for Western Express, but ExpressCo was OK and the owner was a cool guy when I worked for him.
