Hi, I have been out of circulation due to some surgery, but before I went down I had posted about finding the correct wiring harness for installing a Data Star in my rig. It has never had one so it's all a mystery where the harness is. One fellow trucker was trying to help and I have lost track of him. I have found more than one harness that will fit and they are not labeled for Data Star. One is behind the cluster in front of the driver in the upper left corner area, and one behind the panel to the right. I don't want to burn up a computer by hooking up the wrong harness. Is there more than one possibility? Thanks, Jim

Doesn't look like you've had much help. If you want I can pull my cluster back and take a look. Mine's an 04 model but might be the same. Let me know.

OK, Here you go. On mine it's a group of 8 wires that go into a 6 wire connector in the DS. I tried to read the codes off the wires the best I could. Sometimes it's hard to tell between a C,D, or 0 so keep in mind there could be slight differences. IG13D, GD12A (on my truck anything starting GD is a ground), IG130, IG13B, BA060+BA06B go into one and GA01F+GA02F go into one. I took 2 pics.

Hey Mister LowMax, sure was awfully kind of you to take that much time and effort. I certainly appreciate it! I spent my day working on my trailer trying to get it ready for the road again. I just printed the pictures nd wiring information you provided. I'm curious now what I can find. Thanks again, Jim

Ok, so I just figured out why I could not find the PM you sent me. It was to the old user name I had. Yea man no prob. My area code is 518. In my truck it is pre freightliner, so the wiring is different. The data star is basically power, ground, light dimmer, and two data bus wires. The back of the data star indicates each wire on mine. On my truck the data bus wires come from the main plug that goes through the wall.
Now this is from my year wiring harness (2001). The data bus paired wires from the main cab plug are B793B+ (18 awg wire), B792B- (18 awg wire). Then it simply goes to a junction splitter to split into 3 paired "cables". B793D+, B792D- go to the DataStar. B793C+, B792C- go to the ecc. B793E+, B793E- go to the diagnostic connector. So the way all of these items get the info from the ECM is over the data bus cables. So possibly you could get the right Data Star for your truck, power it then plug into the two data bus ports in the diagnostic connector to see if it gives you any info before you cut/ splice any wires in the harness. This is the best I can give you. The wiring is definitely different in your 2005. First the gauges are on a data wire that feeds from one gauge to another. My gauges (2001) are individually fed from the ECC. The different tuners like the PP box and the scan gauge, it all works off the "code" that the data bus puts out. Good luck.

I have a 01 as well and I would kill (well almost) to have a data star... I did learn yrs ago that some trucks were mfg with the data star wiring already part of the harness and some weren't. I've looked for it in mine but still haven't been able to locate the wires

You just have to tap into the data bus wires.

thanks to all you guys for the replies and information. I had a little minor surgery this week so I have not been able to check out the wiring just yet. I will see how far I can take it. I'm pretty good with that stuff but I could not isolate a wire harness I felt comfortable in plugging in when I looked. I think I found two that would fit but not identified. I will let you know and if there is any further info please feel free to post. Take care
