I'm on the verge of buying a 2003 4900EX Lowmax.

The current owner is retiring at 73 and he's offering it up with all the flat deck rigging and extra parts including two sets of drives.

Major systems- trans (18) , diffs, rad, CAC, etc. are all new (not rebuilt) within the last few years.

The C15 has about 500,000 since an inframe and a couple of years since a roll in. (He's. Old School) Also has a few PP goodies. Exhaust manifold, turbo and balancer.

ECM has a tune, but not Bruce's.

All in, it's pure WS porn.

But it's also 12 years old.

So.....specific to the model and model year, what "issues" and weaknesses should I be looking for?

I'd take it in a hearbeat. I'd stick to Cat only filters. I'd put on a water separator (mine has the one with the glass housing that sits sort of "upside down".) I don't think you should have any major issues for quite a while. I go through quite a few of the flex exhaust pieces that join on the y, I think next time I will try stainless and see if they last longer. Oh, and it is a real pita to get under the truck to do anything. Unless you're small, you have to run it up on blocks or ramps to do absolutely anything underneath. Depending what kind of loads you're gonna pull, like the guys said, 1400 min. I have to stay above 1500 if it's more than 10C outside but I pull 8 axles. It's a rare find these days to get a one owner well-looked after unit like that. You probably realize with that low bumper, you have to watch out for snow banks, curbs, large rabbits, etc. I would be very curious to know what he's asking, but I respect your confidentiality also. Anyhow good luck.

Thanks. Interesting that you mentioned the flex pipe. He mentioned the same thing and told me about a modification he made to cure that.
I'm only planing on 5 axle work but it has done 8&9 axle stuff at times.

Good thing I've got an aluminum trailer. It's gonna weigh slightly more than my Columbia LOL.
