Hi! I'm a new hire at YRC (Just finished my probation), and I was hoping to get some advice on a few things from some senior drivers.

As a newbie I know I'm not going to get a solid bid any time soon, but I was wondering if I should try and stay on the extra board or go sleeper? I've been told by fellow drivers at my terminal to do both . . . I mean some tell me sleepers and some tell me the board. I think I'd get more miles on sleepers but being new I wouldn't get to choose my partner. Also, what is the deal with this 15% being taken out of my check? As a new teamster I'm already starting at 85% of top pay and it will take 3 years for me to reach 100%. Now I also got 15% on top of that being taken out. That's 30% before Uncle Sam even gets his paws on it! I'm frankly not sure I can manage this for 3 years. One other thing, How do ya'll keep up with your earned time off? I mean do you just keep up with it in your head or do you have some way of keeping it documented? I've been doing it in my head keeping up with the days I've earned versus the ones I've taken, but I can see how that might get confusing over time.

Thanks for any advice about the above and any other ya'll might give me. I'm open to all advice and direction from those who have been doing this awhile, about anything you might think is important. I want to make this work and retire from YRC, if I can just get past these first couple of years. I have my doubts though on the financial side of it. I just don't see them giving that 15% back even when this contract is up.

I would stay on the extra board..team driving SUCKS..The 15% paycut did us all in..3 years goes by fast...we should snap back to top scale in 2019..but you will get paid for everything you do here...or you could go sit in a sleeper truck at a truck stop all weekend long for no pay..Yea just hang in there.your worst day at LTL is better than your best day OTR....

When I worked for non-union YRC Logistics, I stayed on the extra-board and always refused bid runs. The other drivers were upset because I made a few thousand a year more than they did; it was none of their business anyway. I had an assigned sleeper and ran solo. Picked up the runs that were unexpected and the bid drivers weren't allowed to take them away from me. Loved it! I might get a short run or a cross country run; I didn't care either way.

I used to really gripe the other drivers when it was time to renew the bid runs. When the list was handed to me to pick a set of runs, I would hand it back and say,"Not interested, don't want the pay cut. I'll stay on the extra board."

Would you mind if I ask you what your starting payscale is?

Any of the much better LTL carriers out there like ODFL, Federal Express, UPS, or Saia Motor Freight. I prefer to not be told when I can and cannot work, or giving a % of my earnings to a bunch of people who see me as a bargaining chip. Just my opinion, take it or leave it.

Just because I am young does not mean I have not been around the industry my whole life. My father has been doing this longer then you have, 33 years to be exact. Unlike most people, and I am assuming you as well I didn't just pick this job as a last resort. I have had from the time I was 7 till now of researching and reading and talking with my father's owner op buddy's and Co workers to come up with a pretty good opinion. And just like I said it was an opinion . No need to talk down on someone just because I'm young. If I would not have put my age on my profile would it have changed your response?
