Recently got hired with YRC as a road driver at a Western NY terminal. A couple of questions. The pay and benefits was never discussed so I was hoping someone could shed some light on that. Also, my start date is today, so I am wondering if its just a waiting game to be called in to work?

$2.50/hr and all you can eat. OH, that's Mcds. It's union and it's good pay. You'll be extra board for awhile but just take the runs, you can always drive off into the median if it's too icy. Sit by the phone and sleep late because you do a lot of Thruway night driving. Fix a box with a CB and AM FM IPOD etc if you want anything but shake rattle bang and you can take a bottle of Windex and towels to clean windows and mirrors. If they offer local delivery to you, take it. It's the best work and you get your 12 off before dispatch puts you back on the board. You can call dispatch and they will tell you how far down the board you are but won't tell you how long it will be and don't make a pain of yourself. They are busy. Go and learn.

How long would one wait by the phone on their starting day? Not to be a PITA, but I quit a job to go here so I'm a bit confused on how this works.

Since you are apparently starting out on the extra board, there is a time frame that you are supposed to be available. From such and such time to such and such time you are expected to sity by the phone and wait. Sometimes they will work you, while other times they will not, depending on the freight. Since you are hired, go to your local union office and they will get you a copy of the latest contract. Itwill list pay, benefits, and rules for you to read.

The first couple of years are usually the worst, until you have enough seniority to get a bid (a set time and days you work).

Not sure any of the local union info since I was told I need to be there 30 days before I can join the union. As for as the extra board, I know I'm on it, and need to go through a week training, but no one advised me of hours I needed to be available. I was asked when I can start and what time, I said 6/30 @ 6am, and was put in the system to start. I have called twice to verify I'm on the list, but nothing yet. I a bit frustrating when they need drivers!

If they gave you a date and time to be there, then dont be late. While there ask questions. As for the local, once you pass the probationary period they will have you in the union. The Union wont pass up on their dues. Anyway, once you know the local that covers your terminal go and see them, and ask about a copy of the contract. Generally they have your name as a prospective and will give you a copy. Could even try calling them and explain your situation, they may even send you a copy.

I got you on the union stuff. As for the start date and time, is wasn't a time to be there, but rather a time to begin availability for a run. That's why I'm a little confused because I haven't received a call yet.

My thought would be to call, and ask politely what is happening. Explain your situation and they will usually help you out, or give you a person to contact to help you. Unless he/she is a real jerk, and there are a few around. Good luck.

Were you sleeping during your interview? How could you take a job without even knowing the pay and benefits? Isn't that the most important questions in the interview? You didnt ask? And you quit a job to go there... Sounds like you are really confused...

Its scary we have to share the road with some of you guys

wow, thanks for the honesty. "You guys" on the other hand makes you sound as ignorant as me. We all make mistakes. We learn and move on. "HalpinUout" doesn't seem like the best user name for you. Maybe "HalpinMyself" is more your style. Nice to meet you too.
