That's not how Central States Pension Fund works. YRC pays in a certain amount per employee per week worked (based on 8hrs/ day, so overtime doesn't count). The pension fund, which has nothing to do with YRC, decides what the payout is going to be based on assets in the fund. When the worker is done working, YRC stops paying.
As I said before, the companies say, "I have $50/hr (or $40/hr or $30/hr) to spend... Unions, you divide it up between wages, heath care and pension." They may debate the amount per hour, but that is about it.
Again, I am not saying that unions are good or bad. You think they are bad. That's fine by me, but know what you are talking about. Your example of the city workers in your area has absolutely nothing to do with YRC, it just doesn't apply. The pension set up couldn't be more different or irrelevant. Paying wages for retired employees is not what is dragging YRC down, because they aren't doing that. That money was paid when they were working.
If you want to complain about gov't workers pensions, then start a thread about it. I'll probably go on and agree with you. But it is meaningless here.
YRC is in trouble because of an inexcusable mistake by their executive management team, period, not the unions.luvtheroad Thanks this. -
Hey Ton and Blue, we've covered a lot of topics and with a great amount of thought in our responses. Well, most have been... Of course, the three of us have had good ones. LOL
How about if I start one about being a sales person right now, do you think that would fly? -

you mean like getting rid of all the experienced office people and hiring a crew of 22 year olds more concerned with going out every night and getting drunk than learning the system and ins and outs?
or the upper management that are so removed and disconnected from what "freight" is that they fail to react to trends and new technology?
or supervisors who insist on keeping the adversarial relationship between company and union going? (even when everything is calm and productive)???
luvtheroad and _ton bundle Thank this. -
All excellent points and probably closer to the truth than most people would imagine. Having been in the trucking industry, by my own choice, for longer than I will admit, these are sad days to see the greatest carriers struggling for each breath that they take. It's not only Yellow and the dedicated employees but the other carriers involved within the Yellow circle and their employees who have their futures at stake. I worked for APA Transport in Columbus and it was one of the saddest days of my life when we got the call they were closing. It was the end of an era. They closed before they had to and with some degree of dignity. Good luck and let's hope that the naysayers and the gloom and doom people are wrong and you all made it through these tough times.

WOW!! NO HATRED in this post....THANK YOU for being considerate to just DRIVERS.
I too wish them all WELL and pray for all drivers and their families, no matter the company, whether union or non union._ton bundle and Lilbit Thank this. -
I think this thread has been pretty good about posting things that are pretty much factual (did I spell that correctly) and I for one appreciate that.
These are sad, sad days for Yellow and the carriers under their umbrella. One thing that I have noticed is that no one has said a word about the other carriers. Will they go about their business, I would have to think they'd be affected also?
When you think about the thousands of people involved in this its incredible, there is such a trickle down effect, vendors, truck/trailer mgf. etc. The list is endless. The way it affects surrounding communities too. Does anyone know what's happening with New Penn, etc?Lilbit, _ton bundle and Cybergal Thank this. -

You are 210% right about the CEO. The amazing thing is that he can probably sleep at night while the thousands that he and his henchmen are about to put out on the street are wondering how they are going to survive and care for their families. Not only the employees are affected but everyone involved with these carriers will also be involved in the crisis.
When the company that my husband worked for was in trouble it was a joke that no one bought anything on credit. But it wasn't a joke at all. The stress involved in wondering everyday if you still would have a job at the end of the day and trying to go about your everyday work as a driver was incredible.
Just writing this post and thinking about that guy and his "helpers" just makes me so mad, I cant stand it. But, he will get his, one way or the other, he will pay for what's he's done. Sorry to have become so emotional about this, but I still have a passion for the trucking industry and this makes me sick. -
