An every-day evening commute all changed in a split second when a truck lost control and rolled over the side rail of an on-ramp, landing upside-down in traffic.
The 21-year-old driver of the truck appears to have been going too fast for the ramp when he lost control of the rig and toppled over the side, damaging at least three other vehicles. Miraculously, though three people were taken to the hospital, no one was seriously injured.
Dashcam footage from a vehicle behind the accident captured the whole thing on film which you can see below:

There was another miracle here just yesterday. Northbound flatbed with a load of lumber wiped out for reason unknown. Steering broke? Fell asleep in the middle of the day? Texting? Blew a steer tire? He turned almost 90 degrees to the road and obliterated the guard rail in the median, then he went across three lanes of the southbound side, and obliterated another guard rail before hurtling into a 70′ ravine.
Miraculously, no other vehicles were involved, even though this happened at 6 pm. The driver was airlifted out, but they said his injuries “were not critical.”
Except the injuries to his underpants, undoubtedly. I’m pretty sure those were dead on arrival.

I drove past that on 81 the other day. It looked so bad that I figured that he didn’t make it.
Robert says
Well the driver is a 21 year old kid. There should be an apprentice program for drivers. These kids don’t understand the dangers. I am sure that there are a lot of you young kids that will disagree but I see this all the time. Only time with experienced driver can cure this kind of foolishness.
Josh says
I’m 24 started drivingat 21 never had an accident or ticket. Typically it’s the guys with 10 plus years in rolling trucks over because of their over confidence. Either way it doesn’t matter how old you are as long as you pay attention there won’t be a problem. Not saying there shouldn’t be an apprentice program that’s a good idea but don’t blame this on someone being young.
Robert says
And there is the problem. Young over confident and the hasn’t happen to me. Especially if you are stuck in one those governed trucks.
Josh says
What’s the problem with a governed truck when most states I travel the speed limit is 65/70? Oh that’s right all you “responsible old timers” feel the limit doesn’t apply to you I forgot. And how old was the fed ex drier that hit the bus full of kids? How about the walmart driver in the Tracy Morgan crash? It’s so ignorant to blame a wreck on someone being young instead of realizing accidents happen to everyone. That’s why they’re called accidents. And like I said it doesn’t matter how old you are if you pay attention typically you won’t have a problem.
Josh says
And didn’t most people that are older start by driving trucks on a farm as teenagers? Young and old were all out here trying to make a living some trying to raise a family and it’s wrong to sit here and tell me and every other person my age we shouldn’t be behind the wheel of a truck. Call me dumb over confident cocky immature or whatever makes you feel better the fact is were all drivers we all do the same thing and anything can happen to anyone at any time.
Robert says
They are unsafe because drivers feel the need to sped where they can like work zones, off ramps, inner city etc. I know this because I have years of experience that you do not. Drivers who can do the sped limit travel the limit. And your truck if it has a governor on it is more then likely at 62-64 and even if the speed limit is 65 you will struggle to maintain 60-62. This causes pockets of back up where frustrated motorist will get wild on the passing. Son with your vast years of experience I am sure you have seen this. My own truck is governed at 65 with 68 on the floor and yes it is not safe for that very reason.
Salty Lad says
Age is still a critical factor. Yes, overconfidence can get you killed too, but that’s a trait more seen in youth. FedEx and Walmart are notorious for pushing their drivers past safe driving practices. And the governed\limited trucks are dangerous because you get one “Swift” passing another at half a mile an hour faster, and end up with 3 miles of backup traffic.
Josh says
Like I just said speed limit where I travel is 65/70 that’s it. I don’t go out west. I top out at 65. In a 65/70 mph zone 65 is good enough in my opinion. If cars and big trucks decide they want to speed pass wildly or weave in and out of traffic then I can’t help that. My job is to drive my truck in my lane and get to my destination safely and without incident. Now they just finished unloading me so I’m going to hop off here and disappoint you with my driving.
Ant says
Jackass drivers come in all ages. I see them all day everyday. Middle age seems to be the averAge though.

I have to agree with Josh!! I have had my CDL since I was 18 which is slightly over 18 years ago. First off this is reported by big media. “Get the story out with a video before we have any facts” was there a 4 wheeler that cut the driver off or a 50 year old Billy Big Rigger with a big shiny large car creeping into his lane? could have been speed and could have been distracted driving. The last 2 are certainly not age related. I have seen plenty of older driver have accidents related to speed.

I can’t help but wonder if this was a TransAm driver by the name of Drew Boyce. That kid is ALWAYS on his phone. Just look at his instagram, he does nothing but post videos and pictures while driving. It scares me to think of how little attention he is giving the road with how much he is on instagram. See for yourself. Instagram.com/drewboyce
Bill says
I know there are exceptions but in my opinion 21 is not old enough to drive a rig. I’m also a strong advocate for 21 to drive a motorcycle on the road. It seems most motorcycle fatalities are young guys who drive to fast. It seems the same in this case. I may be jumping the gun on this guy but it appears he was in a turn and took it too fast. 16 for a car, 21 for a motorcycle, 25 for a rig. That’s what I say anyway. That’s why you experience a huge drop off in insurance rates when you hit 25. Because the insurance companies know that at this age you have matured as a driver and are much less likely to file a claim than a 19 year old for example.

Exactly Bill

If I can get into this with an opinion. I am 40 age is relatively unimportant I think it’s the mentality of the person, I was a driver, mechanic and shop supervisor, dock worker finally a pt dispatch in life. I was not a great driver I was a bad driver no tickets, no accidents. Always get my loads on time. The speed limit was optional even though I drove it. My fault was I worked 20 hrs a day per the company request at that time. I was young then and didn’t really understand the consequences then. After seeing them I learned and was an advocate for safe drivers and equipment. Now I am unemployed partially due to that reason. I was a shop supervisor for last couple years for a company that pushed drivers to run unsafe equipment, told they could not log on duty driving and made them sit and wait for their load for up to 5 hours. Only when they got their manifest and ready to leave could they start their day. That is a violation of OSHA and dot regulations.
Connor says
I might be inclined to agree with you if I was over the age of 25. Maybe. But for now, I am 20 years old and ready to start my career in trucking… Carefully.
Douglas Kirk says
I doubt that age has much to do with accidents. Human error causes 9 out of 10 wrecks. I learned how to drive in the oilfields of NE Utah when I was 18. It’s not a very forgiving environment, even though you spend most of the day doing 25mph or less, unless you were born stupid. I will say it yet again: pay attention, don’t be in a hurry, keep on top of your maintenance and you will be fine. 5 million+ miles driven and only 1 incident should be worth something.

The name of this 21 year old suggests he is from the Indian subcontinent. Here in southern Ontario, where Toronto is, it seems that lately all of the major truck accidents, requiering hwy closures, are caused by these drivers. That’s not to say that all of them are bad drivers. I’ve seen a few great ones. But they are the exception. And this has everything to do with our crappy training system, which cannot and does not change the culture and habits of these drivers from India.
That One Guy says
Last summer in SE South Dakota, a SWIFT driver drifted off the interstate. He than went up the grassy hill between an off-ramp and an overpass. Then ramped the truck and trailer, dukes of hazard style over the overpass. to the ground below at speed. The driver said he lost control because of a coughing fit, and was lucky to survive. “Coughing fit”, yeah sure.
mike says
I find no problem with governed trucks. Mine is governed at 65 , up hill and down hill , loaded or empty.
mike says
When you jack knife a truck you don’t have the throttle to pull it back behind you . Then you’ll understand if you survive. Happened to me in 1996. In a construction zone in which a 4 wheeler caused . Ended up speeding through it pulled over and got a compliment. If I was driving one of these new governed trucks same situation the electronic garbage no difference but dead people. The electronics can’t bring a unit under control after it lost. I worked and set the programming up , drove them tested them , and I would prefer to nix stability control and new automatic braking systems. And have the option to turn off traction control , even though I like that one.
Tim says
He probably works for a company that advertises on their trailers,”come to work for us. In 6 weeks
You’ll be a driver. I remember when companies required at the minimum 1 year OTR. On all roads and all type of weather. If he was an actual honest to goodness driver,he’d be able to tell if when he hit that section of highway if he was driving to fast or not
Peter says
The driver was going too fast as he took the ramp from 404 to the 401.He has been charged with careless driving. This was a topic of debate for 2 days on all the local talk shows in Toronto area.
Scott says
All trucks in Ontario have to be governed at 105 km/hr
Anthony Thomas says
Age and race is the reason? Origin? Hahahaha. Wow. People need to suck it up and realize the issue is trying to beat a clock, not where you received training. Anyone with half a brain knows that being in a hurry can (and likely will) be a fatal mistake. Also, No one learns to drive in bad conditions without driving in bad conditions, and as a rule of thumb, bad conditions should not be driven in. And gunning the throttle to bring your trailer back in line? Try steering out of the skid with the clutch depressed. Governer doesn’t matter then, and all the tires spin same speed. Physics, the spinning tires will lead, meaning if you throttle the truck your drives will lead, not your steers, causing a jack knife. And if you really believe throttling it is the way to be, don’t bump the governer and you’ll have that little extra to jack knife… I mean, bring the trailer back in line. The only time you need power is to pull through a corner, mainly in downhill situations. Trailer won’t usually pass going uphill. Of course, driving a prudent and appropriate speed for the terrain and weather conditions, or stopping when the conditions can lead to issues, would be the best thing. You can kill someone even if you do it all right… You have to watch out for the other guy and decide if it’s ok for you to be on the road at that time WITH HIM or in those conditions. When he dies hitting your truck even though you did it all right, you’ll still feel terrible and may or may not have it in you to get back behind the wheel of ANYTHING, let alone a truck.
