A 19-year-old with a serious illness had his day brightened immeasurably by a group of more than 50 truckers who dropped everything and turned out to surprise and support the young man and his family.
According to his mother Michelle, Dylan Rottscheit has always wanted to be a truck driver. Unfortunately, that dream is made difficult by his condition. Dylan has neurofibromatosis, a nervous system disorder that can cause tumors to grow around the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
So, Michelle worked with a truck driver to organize a very special surprise for Dylan and her whole family.
The driver, Bob Ganski, didn’t know the family, but heard Dylan’s story and offered to help. He reached out to some fellow truckers, and more than 50 drivers from all over the Midwest responded to his call.
On Saturday morning, Dylan and his whole family were surprised when more than 50 trucks convoyed into Marshfield, WI and all rallied around Dylan.
“We had it set up that his mom would act like her car had broke down or she was meeting somebody so Dylan didn’t really know why they were sitting there,” explained Ganski to local ABC station, WXOW. “It’s something that he’s gonna look back on, smile, and enough to make his day but we definitely made his year.”
Dylan has a surgery scheduled in the next few months to try and take care of two tumors he has in his brain. Doctors hope the surgery will relieve some pressure and make it easier for Dylan to walk.
Ganski says that he hopes to make this convoy a yearly tradition for other kids who are battling with life-threatening illnesses.
When asked why he organized the event, Ganski replied “it was just something that I could do to give back.”
