Clinical trials by SleepSafe Drivers yielded positive results, the Calif.-based company says. The test of its sleep apnea diagnosis and treatment programs for carrier fleets was run to quantify the benefits to drivers’ health and safety.
Collaborating with J. B. Hunt and Fusion Sleep, a Ga.-based clinical sleep medicine provider, SleepSafe Drivers provides a lower-cost On-Site testing and Sure Compliance treatment specifically designed for truck drivers. The overall goal is to improve the health of drivers, and show carriers how the service can reduce medical expenses and fatigue-related accidents, thus also reducing costs.
In one example, after beginning therapy for apnea through the program, one J. B. Hunt driver had lost 115 lbs., eliminated chronic fatigue and was able to start an exercise regime for the first time in years, reports Greer Woodruff, the carrier’s senior vice-president of corporate safety and security. “There is absolutely no doubt that he is healthier and safer as a result of the program,” says Greer.
SleepSafe Drivers president, Dana Voien, claims that with cost-savings from using the program, “we are confident that fleets will recognize a four to ten month payback on the program investment, so it more than pays for itself in the first year alone.”
