Although the infrastructure and logistics needed to effectively recharge upwards of 15 million commercial motor vehicles and another 15 million passenger cars are not in place, Navistar plans to outfit the new International LT Series tractor with its last internal combustion engine. The company plans to put its energy and efforts into developing zero-emissions truck engines such as the battery-electric models Nikola has slowly been moving off assembly lines.
“The internal combustion engine will be required for many years until the electric vehicle can be fully adopted when we have an available cross-country infrastructure,” Navistar CEO Mathias Carlbaum reportedly said. “So, as we do, we designed the S13 integrated powertrain to ensure it’s as sustainable as possible without ever compromising anything on performance.”
Its latest Class 8 tractor builds on previous models, improving safety, handling, and a streamlined aerodynamic package. Navistar indicates the package can increase fuel efficiency by upwards of 15 percent when compared to the International A26 engine. Upgrades include the following.
- Diesel exhaust fluid and fuel fill closeouts allow air to flow smoothly over the chassis skirts.
- Steer wheel closeouts and a modified lower skirt trim improve underbody airflow by restricting airflow through the wheel opening.
- A new roof extender improves air flow between the tractor and trailer gap.
The truck manufacturer reportedly established goals that include producing a total of 50 percent zero-emission vehicles by 2030 and making only zero-emission cars, trucks, and semis by 2040.
“Obviously, with Navistar’s product mix, electric medium-duty trucks will make up most of the 2030 number,” Carlbaum reportedly said. “But we’ve said before that when the industry is ready for long-haul electric trucks, we’ll be there.”
PS Logistics Buys Noble Trucking
DMT Trucking, a subsidiary of PS Logistics, recently closed a deal with the Noble family in Scottsboro, Alabama, which onboards Noble, Noble Trucking, and Noble Logistics.
“We are proud to welcome Noble to the PS Logistics family,” PS Logistics CEO Scott Smith reportedly said. “We look forward to working with Noble’s strong team of drivers and operators while also continuing to deliver best-in-class service to its customers.”
PS Logistics is a flatbed transportation and support provider that touts over 400 power units and upward of 1,000 trailers following the Noble purchase. The deal continues a string of moves that involve partnerships with family-owners operations in the flatbed niche. PS Logistics has reportedly bought up 26 trucking and logistics outfits since 2014.
“Over the last few decades, my father and our existing management team have built a successful trucking operation with dedicated employees that serve outstanding customers, and we will strive to continue that tradition with the same commitment to excellence,” Noble owner Samuel Noble Jr. reportedly said. “I have known the PS Logistics team for many years, and I look forward to working with them on their journey to become the pre-eminent flatbed carrier in the country.”
