The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is set to launch its 2026 Human Trafficking Awareness Initiative (HTAI) across the United States from January 12 through January 16. The annual initiative is designed to raise awareness about human trafficking within the commercial motor vehicle industry and to equip drivers, motor carriers, law enforcement, and the general public with tools to recognize and report potential trafficking activity.
CVSA, which coordinates safety and enforcement efforts throughout North America, uses this initiative to highlight the important role the trucking industry plays in identifying and disrupting human trafficking. Because commercial drivers regularly travel long distances and frequent rest areas, truck stops, and loading facilities, they are uniquely positioned to notice suspicious behavior that others may overlook.
During the five-day awareness campaign, participating jurisdictions across the U.S. will conduct education and outreach activities. These efforts may include distributing informational materials, engaging with drivers at inspection sites or truck stops, and reinforcing reporting procedures with enforcement personnel. All participating jurisdictions will report their outreach efforts and observations back to CVSA, with a national summary of results expected to be released later this summer.
A key component of the initiative is education. CVSA provides awareness resources to its members and partners to ensure consistent messaging and clear guidance on how to identify potential trafficking situations. With support from TAT (formerly known as Truckers Against Trafficking), CVSA distributes free materials such as wallet cards, posters, and window decals. These tools outline common warning signs and provide clear instructions on how and where to report suspected trafficking safely.
Human trafficking, as defined by the United Nations, involves the recruitment, transportation, or harboring of people through force, fraud, or deception for the purpose of exploitation. Victims can be men, women, or children of any age or background. Traffickers often rely on threats, physical violence, false promises of employment, or deceptive education opportunities to maintain control over victims.
Within the trucking environment, indicators of trafficking may include individuals who appear fearful, avoid eye contact, are unable to speak freely, or appear to be under someone else’s control. CVSA’s initiative emphasizes that drivers and enforcement officers are not expected to intervene directly. Instead, the focus is on recognizing warning signs and reporting concerns to appropriate authorities so trained professionals can respond.
By hosting the Human Trafficking Awareness Initiative each year, CVSA reinforces the message that combating trafficking is a shared responsibility. The program aims to strengthen awareness, encourage vigilance, and support collaboration between the trucking industry, law enforcement, and advocacy organizations to help prevent exploitation and protect vulnerable individuals.
