Truck drivers continue to face health and fitness challenges due to the sedentary nature of the occupation. Although an 18-wheeler may be moving 70 mph or faster, CDL professionals experience relatively little physical activity for upwards of 12 hours per day. Health-conscious truckers may be pleased to learn that a new app is expected to hit Transfix trucker dashboards in March.
Transfix, a digital freight platform, recently announced a partnership with The Trucking Fitness Company (TFC). The partnership is designed to provide truckers with increased access to daily workout routines that can be followed while on the road and even inside the rig. Personalized routines can reportedly be tailored to improve physical fitness in the cab. This aspect makes the program suitable for OTR truckers who encounter inclement weather and find themselves stuck indoors.
“Drivers play a crucial role in our supply chain, their overall health and well-being is important to us, and we always want them to feel their best,” Transfix vice president Guy Byars reportedly said. “A key initiative for our company this year is to continue our investment in the trucking community’s health and wellness, which is why partnering with The Trucking Fitness Company was a no-brainer for us. We’re confident that this partnership will continue to make a positive difference and improve the community’s quality of life.”
The program can be personalized to account for physical and health limitations and comes with nutritional habit suggestions. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, truckers are twice as likely to become obese when compared to other workers. They are also more prone to heart disease, high cholesterol, and diabetes. These conditions are largely exacerbated by a lack of low-impact cardiovascular exercise and meals from truck stops and fast-food chain restaurants.
“TFC is on a mission to help as many truck drivers as possible with their health and wellness,” TFC founder Mark Manera reportedly said. “I started the company following my physical therapy experience and seeing first hand the toll a lifetime of truck driving can do to the body. Working with Transfix, a leader in the freight space, will allow our fitness and nutrition app to get into the hands of hundreds of truck drivers that offer them a user-friendly solution to staying healthy on the road.”
Transfix officials reportedly pursued a partnership with TFC based on the results of a survey conducted during National Truck Driver Appreciation Week 2021. The results indicated 24 percent of truckers fail to exercise due to time constraints, 19 percent pointed to lack of fitness equipment, and 45 percent said both issues negatively affected them. Upwards of 74 percent of drivers polled indicated they were not following a healthy diet. Transfix and TFC plan to offer discounted memberships beginning March 1.
