The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) plans to distribute approximately 15.5 million cloth face masks to transportation workers to help combat the spread of COVID-19. Only a small percentage of those will be available to truckers.
Secured by FEMA, the 15.5 million “cloth facial coverings” will be sent to workers and businesses via the postal service.
“Transportation workers are on the frontlines of keeping our transportation systems operational during this public health emergency and their wellbeing and safety is paramount,” said Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao according to Overdrive.
Transportation workers getting sick is of concern on a national level. Not only because they keep the country moving, but also because one infected individual could spread the virus to multiple different communities. Face masks will help prevent transportation workers from getting sick, but they will also help prevent those same workers from carrying the virus with them wherever they go.
The “Highway and Motor Carrier” segment is getting 2.1 million face masks allocated to it. 4.8 million will go to mass transit and passenger rail, 3.8 million to aviation, 2.4 million to maritime workers, 2.2 million to freight rail, and 258,000 to pipeline system workers.

Oh yes, the useless face mask. What amounts to what I call a slave accessory. The reason there was a scare over a virus is to more easily allow our psychopath overlords to officially introduce their police state. That includes tracking of individuals and forced poisoning (vaccinations).
The best argument I have ever heard, against vaccination, is the idea that someone thinks that they should have the right to know someone else’s vaccination status, or to pressure someone else on the subject. Other than that, the anti-vaccination arguments are consistently false, misleading, and usually wing-nut ridiculous. Even where standard vaccinations have side effects or aren’t particularly effective, the rewards still far outweigh the risks.
Roll the dice with two weeks of gasping death if you think it makes you look less like a slave; I don’t care. It doesn’t make you any less a slave, but it might make you more of a cadaver. You choose your own roads to freedom. I’m looking forward to having the option of a needle in my arm, rather than a block of marble over my head.

Is sad to see someone saying that the trucking industry was not impacted, when all of the freight rates the brokers and people taking advantage of the situation brought those prices way down to the point that many trucking companies were forced to go bankrupt.

All of this, on the mistaken impression that the masks serve to protect the wearer. They do not. Cloth masks help (poorly) mitigate the risks to everyone within six feet of the wearer (mostly no one, if you’re a solo driver) from accidental infection by the wearer – in the event that he/she is infected and doesn’t know it.

Every part of that was just terrible. The mask isn’t to protect you; it’s to mitigate the risk of accidental exposure *from* you. Put simply, if you have the disease and you blow a chunky sneeze, the chunks land in your mask – not on the surfaces or people around you.
The first clue that “essential” was a euphemism for “expendable”, was when they paid everybody else more money to stop working, than they paid you to continue working.
And it is precisely because nose-pickers are more “essential” (and better paid) than we are, that our staying home for two weeks would bust no spines but our own.

The masks (which probably mostly won’t make it to drivers, anyway) aren’t intended to stop the virus by protecting drivers. They are supposed to protect everyone else from being infected by drivers, after we get infected. We are expected to continue working after being infected, since we can typically neither afford treatment nor time off, and we generally could not get to a treatment or testing facilty without abandoning the truck and/or load, in any event.

In general, the protesters have a valid beef, which was/is not being addressed by the systems which are ordinarily supposed to do so. The use of (mostly) peaceful protest follows the highest traditions of American citizenship and patriotism.
Police (and everyone else) should not be using force indiscriminately, disproportionately, or punitively – with or without racial bias. When they do so for decades at a time, and not votes nor voices are effective at correcting the situation, the founding fathers would say that it is the responsibility – not just the right -of good citizens to apply fire to the task. Indiscriminate destruction, violence, looting and theft are not helpful, but are more the realm of self-interested opportunists than the protesters – and if more targeted violence (like the burning of the police station) is hard to stomach, it is at least easy to understand.
If you can’t understand the rebellion of people who feel crushed under the boot heel of an oppressive police state, then you should probably revisit your relationship with the Department of Transportation.

Repeating yourself, like typing in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, is the online version of shouting for attention, and is typically only necessary when your message doesn’t warrant the attention that it seeks, and the writer knows it. I do understand. When you spend your life locked away in a truck cab, it feels as though no one cares what you think about any topic, and we really have very little else to do with our time but think about everything. Driving is just not that intellectually demanding. It makes us frustrated and worried and it makes us feel unappreciated.
