J.B. Hunt Transport Services has worked with freight technology company Overroute to develop a new artificial intelligence platform designed for carriers and logistics operators. Following approximately one year of co-design and testing, Overroute has publicly launched its AI freight execution platform to help transportation companies automate routine coordination, respond to shipment problems and improve the use of their equipment.
Overroute’s platform uses AI agents to manage many of the repetitive tasks involved in moving a load from pickup to delivery. These agents can read live operational data, monitor shipments and identify exceptions such as delays, changing orders or capacity problems. They can also assist with customer communications while operating within a carrier’s existing technology systems.
Unlike tools that only alert employees when a problem occurs, Overroute is designed to help manage the steps required to resolve common freight issues. However, human operators remain involved when situations require judgment, approval or direct customer interaction. This approach allows logistics teams to reduce administrative work without completely removing people from the decision-making process.
The technology is already being used across J.B. Hunt’s business units and has supported operations involving millions of loads. Working inside one of North America’s largest and most complex freight networks gave Overroute an opportunity to test its system at a significant scale before offering it to other carriers and logistics providers.
A major goal of the platform is to improve asset utilization. Trucks, trailers and containers can become less productive when delays, communication gaps or poor coordination leave equipment sitting unused. By tracking operational information and helping teams respond faster, Overroute aims to reduce these disruptions and improve how carriers position and use their assets.
The platform was created through J.B. Hunt’s collaboration with UP.Labs, a company that works with major businesses to build technology-focused startups. J.B. Hunt announced its partnership with UP.Labs in October 2024 as part of an effort to develop new solutions for freight transportation. Overroute is the first company launched through that initiative.
J.B. Hunt leadership described artificial intelligence as a tool that can support employees and improve freight execution across the company’s network. Rather than replacing existing transportation management systems, Overroute is intended to work alongside them. This may make adoption easier for carriers that want to use AI without replacing their current software infrastructure.
For fleets, the system could reduce the time employees spend monitoring individual shipments, updating customers and coordinating responses to routine problems. That may allow dispatchers and operations teams to focus more attention on safety, service quality, driver support and complicated freight decisions.
The launch reflects the trucking industry’s growing interest in AI technology that can perform operational work instead of simply producing reports or recommendations. As carriers face pressure to control costs and increase productivity, platforms such as Overroute could help companies manage freight more efficiently while maintaining human oversight of important decisions.
