
Kenworth is expanding battery-electric technology into demanding Class 8 vocational applications with the T880E, a zero-emission version of its established T880 platform. Designed for construction, municipal operations, local delivery, and other vocational duties, the truck combines electric propulsion with the configurations and upfit flexibility fleets expect from traditional work trucks.
Introduced in 2025 as the industry’s first Class 8 battery-electric truck specifically built for vocational applications, the T880E offers multiple battery configurations. Fleets can select battery setups providing an estimated range from approximately 100 to more than 250 miles, allowing operators to match battery capacity with specific routes and workloads.
Kenworth Director of Marketing Kyle Kimball said the truck is attracting interest for municipal operations, government contracts, state projects, construction work, and local vocational delivery. Applications involving roofing or construction materials could be particularly suitable because these trucks generally operate predictable routes and return to a central location where charging infrastructure can be installed.
One advantage is the T880E’s connection to Kenworth’s existing diesel-powered T880. Rather than developing an entirely unfamiliar vocational platform, Kenworth retained key characteristics of the conventional model while replacing its traditional powertrain with an electric system. The T880E is available with both set-back and set-forward front axle configurations and retains the multi-piece hood design of the conventional T880.
Power comes from PACCAR’s integrated electric powertrain. Depending on configuration, it delivers between 365 and 470 horsepower continuously, with peak output reaching 605 horsepower and 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque. Its central-drive electric motor also provides important advantages for vocational applications because it preserves wheelbase flexibility and allows fleets to install lift axles more easily than some e-axle configurations.
Charging capability represents another major improvement. The T880E uses a CCSI DC charging port supporting up to 350 kW. According to Kenworth, the largest five-string, 625-kWh battery configuration can be charged in approximately two hours, helping fleets reduce downtime between operating shifts.
Kenworth also designed the truck with vocational upfitting requirements in mind. The T880E is offered as both a tractor and straight truck, allowing fleets to configure it for bodies such as flatbeds and dump trucks. Battery placement requires body builders to consider available chassis space, particularly when larger battery configurations are selected. Kenworth said it works closely with upfitters to address those packaging requirements.
Power take-off capability is another important feature for vocational fleets. Operators can choose a familiar mechanical PTO or use a high-voltage junction box that connects equipment directly to the truck’s electric system. This flexibility allows specialized equipment to operate while supporting the different requirements found across construction, municipal, and other work-truck applications.
With configurable battery capacity, faster charging, substantial torque, and vocational-focused upfit options, the T880E represents Kenworth’s effort to make battery-electric technology practical beyond traditional pickup-and-delivery operations. Its design gives fleets interested in reducing tailpipe emissions an electric option without abandoning many of the capabilities associated with the established T880 vocational platform.
