Florida’s Turnpike has started the change-over to a open-road cashless tolling system. The Toll-by-Plate system uses photos of drivers’ tags to charge tolls, with the bill mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.
The turnpike will accept comments on the issue until Dec. 1, but started the conversion on Nov. 8, on 26 miles in Miami-Dade County. Tollbooth removal is expected in Feb. 2011.
Other states are in various stages of implementing cashless system. In Colorado, the E-470 toll road in Denver went cashless in July, and the state plans to institute non-stop tolling for the Northwest Parkway as well. Cashless toll systems are in place for several of Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority’s highways. Both New York and New Jersey’s Port Authority have looked at electronic toll systems.
