The Next Generation in Trucking Foundation (supporter of the NGT Association) received a $127,760 grant from Knorr-Bremse Global Care North America to develop a free high school truck driving curriculum. It integrates materials from NGT co-founder David Dein and will be available online for face-to-face, blended, & virtual environments in September 2023.
Lindsey Trent, co-founder & president of NGT, said it would open opportunities for students from economically disadvantaged schools. The curriculum prepares high schoolers to take the official test & obtain their permit once they turn eighteen.
“Trucking is an essential and dynamic industry,” said Maria Gutierrez, president of KBGCNA and senior director of environmental, social, and governance at Bendix. KBGCNA’s investments support youth, education, and underprivileged populations, aiming to reach high schools in economically struggling areas.
NGT is creating pathways to interstate driving careers for 18-20 year-olds. “Our industry is facing an unprecedented shortage of almost 80,000 drivers,” said Trent. KBGCNA, operated by Germany-based Knorr-Bremse, and Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC, will facilitate the grant to improve the lives of youth in need.
According to Bendix director Gutierrez, “Trucking can be a lifeline of many sorts, and programs like this can be life-changing for generations to come.”
