The Wall Street Journal recently offered a nuanced assessment of the high inflation and telltale signs the U.S. is barreling into a recession. “New data sends a different message: rather than in recession, the economy might be in something closer to a stall,” it recently reported.
Regardless of whether communities are experiencing recession or are stuck in neutral, trucking outfits are in high gear. ITS Logistics announced an expansion into the Midwest and Tradesman Trucking recently made overtures it will purchase more land in Virginia to expand its operations after just breaking ground on a proposed warehouse facility.
Nevada-based ITS Logistics reportedly plans to invest upwards of $28 million into its Whitestown, Indiana, location after building a pair of warehouses tallying nearly 600,000 square feet. The operation’s West Coast capacity involves more than 1.4 million square feet. But the company’s goal appears to be possessing the bandwidth to service 90 percent of the population within two days. That’s why the Indiana facility is expected to increase to 2 million square feet.
“Midwest expansion has long been a growth priority for ITS, and we’ve been fortunate to build a great workforce in Whitestown in a short amount of time,” ITS Logistics president of assets Ryan Martin reportedly said. “Our ability to distribute to the entire country quickly will enable us to further increase our level of service for our clients, providing innovative fulfillment solutions across distribution modes.”
The expansion is expected to create 350 jobs over the next two years, with the trucking fleet reaching 65 tractors, 200 trailers, and more than 70 CDL professionals. ITS Logistics already employs more than 800 people throughout Indiana, Nevada, California, Washington, Oregon, Utah, Arizona, Ohio, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. The organization is actively recruiting warehouse workers, forklift operators, and truck drivers.
As remarkable as ITS Logistics growth appears, Tradesman Trucking officials recently broke ground in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, on a 22,500-square-foot warehouse in the Gretna Industrial Park. Construction costs have been pegged at $4.5 million and officials are considering adding a 25,000-square-foot facility nearby.
“Our primary goal in this relocation to Gretna is to enter as a member, serve as a neighbor and co-labor to build and grow this community that we have already become so fond of,” James Garner, managing partner of Tradesman Trucking, reportedly said. “When you choose a location for business, you are also choosing a community, and as such, we believe that the community we are located in should both be supported by us and support us.”
Tradesman was reportedly founded 10 years ago to transport Yankee Candles materials and products between two locations. The company expanded into general freight transportation, providing services for snack food sellers, print media, and household goods retailers. Its services continue to diversify, now working with recyclers and the formation of employee-owned offshoot Tradesman XDR.
In the face of 40-year-high inflation, recession predictions, and the economic “stall,” trucking companies continue to beat the odds by expanding and hiring CDL holders at higher wages.
