Senators from the Commerce, Environmental and Public Works, and Banking and Finance committees have requested a debate and vote to extend the current federal highway bill.
The senate extended the bill, which originally expired Sept. 30, using short-term measures to fund several federal programs that will now expire Dec. 18. Seven chairmen and high-level minority members from the committees sent the request in a letter to senators Harry Reid (D-NV) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY), the majority and minority leaders, respectively.
Members of the Environment and Public Works Committee, senate leaders Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and James Inolfe (R-OK) have shown support for extending the bill for 18 months, as has the executive administration. House Democrats have supported a multi-year extension.
