A trucker was shot during a road rage incident coming out of a construction zone in Florida. Authorities are still looking for the shooter.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office received a call at around 10:30 pm on Thursday, March 14th. During an apparent road-rage incident, a man had opened fire and hit a truck driver behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.
According to the unnamed driver, he had been in a traffic slowdown on I-75 in Florida. A section of the road near the SR 200 exit in Ocala was under repairs. The trucker told authorities that after he exited the construction zone, he saw an SUV weaving in and out of traffic behind him.
Eventually, the SUV allegedly pulled up alongside the truck in the emergency lane. The driver says that he then heard a loud popping sound that sounded like his tire blowing out.
Actually, the driver of the SUV next to him had fired several shots. The passenger side window of the truck shattered and a bullet struck the trucker in the arm. The SUV then sped away.
Despite the injury, the driver was able to maintain control, pull over, and call 911. He was taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
It is not clear why the SUV driver targeted the trucker. The investigation is till ongoing and no suspects are known to the public at this time.

Is it just me or is this happening more and more? Maybe time to put some 3A armor in the door.
Trolo says
No camera in windshield? That would be enough to get the suv tag information
Richard Stewart says
Sometimes that video isn’t clear enough for police to blow it up. I had an incident where I was cut off by an suv and my camera was rolling. I sent the video to the local police department and they couldn’t read the tags.

I’m a local driver and I carry my Beretta 92 in my lunch color and a Ruger lcp 2 in my pocket.
I’ve had problems with people in Kentucky with thier road rage and I’m sick of it.
I’ve had people brandish guns and throw stuff at my truck to someone stepping up on my step.
If you live in a non USSR police state than keep in mind there are no federal laws saying you can’t carry in a commercial vehicle.
You have to fallow the state and local laws however but I doubt any have laws saying you can’t carry in your truck.
Inanyminet says
You doubt? You just may find out the hard way one day
Mike says
Id rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6
James Edward Riddick Jr. says
I’m definetly with you on that
Rightlane 76 says
I 100% agree with ya!
Gene says
You are allowed to carry in a commercial vehicle in all states. The cab is your office and the sleeper is your home. It is your constitutional right to carry in those places. Even if your company that you drive for doesn’t allow you to. IN YOUR TRUCK that is the catch phrase unless you have a carry permit
Big Booblyboo says
If you’re a company driver then the truck is not yours. Technicalities can get you convicted or set you free.
Sheriff John says
Reciprocity varies in most states. Im from CA and a retired Sergeant from a So California Sheriff’s Dept, and that was no help in West Virginia on I-81. I was randomly pulled over one day, upon contact and after handing over my truck papers and credentials, I produced my retired I.D. card, badge, and CDL and advised I have a gun. I told the officers where it was and next thing I know they’re searching my truck after my gun was collected. I was told WV does not have reciprocity with most states and CA isn’t one of them. My weapon was eventually returned. Ill never carry again OTR.
MICHAEL WHITEHEAD says
I’d rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6!
Jim says
That’s what I was going to say.
The laws are against working, non-violent people.

federal rules and regs say you can’t carry while operating a CMV.

Each state has its own laws regarding the right to carry. Gary Slider of handgunlaw.us has an extremely informative and up to date website, with interactive maps and links to applications for permits in each state. This site is frequently updated and has a simple format. Gary answers every e-mail personally.

Android app “Legal Heat” tells you the laws in each state.

There are no federal dot laws against a truck driver carrying a firearm but you do have to be careful of state laws

Percheron1 says
There is no uniform state transportation procedure for firearms. If in doubt, a traveler should carry firearms unloaded, locked in a case, and stored in an area (such as a trunk or attached toolbox) where they are inaccessible from a vehicle’s passenger compartment and not visible from outside the vehicle. Any ammunition should be stored in a separate locked container.
Authorities may search anywhere within your reach without a search warrant after a valid stop. They may not open and search closed luggage without probable cause to believe evidence of a crime will be found. This applies particularly to luggage in locked storage areas or the trunk of a vehicle. Consent is necessary for such search. You have the right not to consent.
You also have the right to remain silent.

If I see someone pull up along side me with a gun then I’m going to swerve into them and put them in the ditch or wall or wherever they go! I don’t care if it puts me in jail either!

My thoughts exactly. If you point a weapon at me (and I see it) I’ll use this 80,000# weapon in my defense.

Amen brother! I’ve got 29+years. I’m scared to death now on the road. Even the slow lane will get you shot.
Don P says
It would be clear enough. Because I shoot back
R.J. says
Sounds like someone WANTED attention and shooting the truck was a guaranteed way to make the news that night.
Don P says
The problem is that most drivers don’t pay attention what’s going on around them. Most drivers are distracted from the time they get up in the morning till they go to bed. They have no business driving a truck to begin with. It’s to the point every time I turn the key, is that gonna be my last? For the main fact of the other drivers doing stuff other than driving their trucks. Playing on their phones, reading, watching tv going down the road. There are way to many obstacles in the roadway anymore. You need to be driving your truck, the trucks around you, and all the cars to boot. You have to be on your toes. Trucking has came to a bad crossroads. They just give anyone a license any more. No experience necessary!
Tanner says
You’re absolutely right. This industry has gone from truck drivers to people who drive trucks.
I think you know what I mean.
Tim says
No parking, cities banning trucks and walmart not letting a trucker shop and park. Hey, Walmart Truckers are a huge segment of income for the public company! Low poverty pay and 70 hour work weeks!
John White says
We as truckers have to on an everyday basis have to do the job of the police ! Already our lives are at risk driving th heat 80,000 pound bullets so these same godless people who slander us and shoot us can eat there chicken sandwiches sandwiches!. We have more responsibility to ourselves our family’s and to the the family’s of the same people who we feed and bring in all the comforts of home! While we are away from our own ! We should stand up and create a bill that allows us to freely carry weapons for our own protection as truckers we deserve this protection ! And the police simply cant at a moments notice! So it’s up to us for the sake of our lives and the lives of a nation of drivers on the national highways ! Aren’t we Americans? I question this point !
Carole Moore says
I would agree with you, if all truckers were godly. I have carried otr for 40 years, but my philosophy is that you don’t use a fire arm unless you are protecting your life. I have seen as much road rage where the truck was the aggressor. I have witnessed a driver shot over a parking spot
Lonnie says
There are no federal laws and rules that say you can not carry a weapon in any CMV. I carried in every state and before I started to carry I called state law enforcement to make sure I followed each state law. Simple way was I bought 2 gun safes and used them as directed by each state. Check the laws and know what your talking about instead of spreading false rumors. Again each state is different and you have to ensure that you follow each one to the letter!!!
Trishlm says
Keeping them in a gun safe isn’t going to do you any good on the highways, however a gun fight between 2 vehicles driving down the road isn’t real bright either. Maybe if more truckers would know how to drive it wouldn’t happen. Going to a few weeks of school doesn’t make you a trucker.
Allen Hartley says
So how do you get to your safe to get your gun when you need it – “just a minute, let me pull the truck over and get my gun”???
Mike says
It’s not going to be pretty when truckers get sick of it and start shooting back
Kevin B says
Amen
ROBERT M AVILA says
You arm the stupid…this is the outcome. Most men in the stupid column should never be allowed a gun. And how do you determine this…temperament.
Trishlm says
With the crash dummies these schools are putting on the highways these days, the shooter could have had a reason.
Turner says
We as truck drivers are 3rd class citizens in the eyes of everyone else and I am past being totally sick of it. Everyone is my friend and wants my money and business until they find out I’m a driver then they act like I’m trash. I have decided everyone in general can just kiss my rear. I don’t shop at Walmart and I carry my gun wherever I go. I buy my needs from people who treat me like they want my business or I find someone else to deal with.
Gary says
I had my .40 confiscated in MI due to me not having CCW from my state of origin.
Stogie J says
It’s sad to say that the driver is at more danger and defensless against others out there on the highways.
