If Mack kept up on the HP and creature comforts........

It could be a DM since it is a mixer. The DM was a heavier duty version of the U.

 

It was called a Sidewinder.

 

I think they built them this way because it was a shorter version of th R model. To be used for straight trucks an city tractors.
The engine was into the cab thus they shortened the cab to one side.
One of the first trucks I ever drove was a sidewinder pulling a pulpwood trailer.

IF I had to do what I did with Macks other more plain road tractors, I would have probably broke them.

 

First truck I drove was a U model twin stick. For 10 minutes, in a parking lot.

 

Found some more old Mack snap shots, mid '80's vintage. I regret that I didn't take more pictures back then, but all I had then was a Kodak with roll film, that took a couple weeks to get developed, and back to you. We sure have come a long way since then.

Last year, our U model Mack was the most used cement truck.

Even when one of our drivers seized the engine 3 years ago. The boss still wants that truck to keep running.

So oil pan was dropped, the main bearings were peeled off of the crank with a crow bar and turning with a Johnson bar.

Emery cloth of 120 grit to get the bronze off, 320 grit to remove 120 scratches, then 400 to remove 320 scratches.

Final touch up was scotch brite to remove 400 scratches.

Plastigage the new bearings. Specs checks out, roll in all new bearings.

Install oil pan, add oil and engine is running again with good oil pressure.

One happy boss.

I myself usually prefer the 1992 ford 8000 cement truck with the 8.3 cummins. Has a weird transmission which I don’t know what it’s called.

As much as I tear into one ex employer in West Little Rock, his Autocar mixers were a joy to me. Its not mack, but I'll take them all day. And he does not even know. He called them punishment trucks. I dont see anything bad in them.

One simple need for one of their bulk tankers was airride for a day cab tractor. I would still be working there happy today. But no. Its all about the money honey and none of it for the drivers.

 

We also have a I think a 1995 mack cement truck...

looks to be the same size small cab as a U but in the center instead of on the side.



Some time ago, before I was working there, they had this big tandem tandem mixer....
