Looking for some info for a friend in Dallas area. He is interested in driving a truck but has no CDL and has family to feed so he can't quit his job to attend CDL school. From what I read in the past LTL companies have dock worker to truck driving programs. Are these programs hard to get into and which companies offer it? Thanks

Usually it working 6 to 8 hours and school for 4. Have him start calling now. This is the time when LTL starts to pick back up for the year.

Most line haul companies have that program. Probably depends if the terminal needs people or not.

I think ABF also has a program that helps you obtain a CDL while working the dock. Might wanna look them up.
ulenie Thanks this. -
Any of them.
I'd start at UPS if it were me. You're gonna do like 4 years in the warehouse working hard, but then you become a parcel driver, and got it made.
Then if there's an opening you become cdl driver.
2nd choice would be fedex or any of the union ltl shops.
Go down to the Teamsters hall. Hang around until you get hired or arrested for trespassing.homeskillet, Sirscrapntruckalot and ulenie Thank this. -
I know this doesn't apply to your friend, but good info to have.

ConWay was famous for their dock to driver program but when XPO bought them I don't know what they did with it.
LTL is currently slow so the timing may not be that great.Texas_hwy_287, truckdriver31 and ulenie Thank this. -
Great info guys thanks much.
I am guessing one has to work the dock for a few months before starting CDL training?
