I finally just got what you meant about not hooking to the rail. The pic doesnt show very well that i wanted pull from both sides for a full circular wrap around all the rebar bundles, so i used the driver side winches and a hand ratchet on passenger side. I used to use a hookless strap for this but only had one so this was how i did it with straps that still had their hook, by feeding the fold. There were 3 piles of 20s and i did one full wrap on each, the rest of the securement was normal.
Todays trick is what to do with super shorty straps. Guys who keep straps on the winch need good full length straps and toss short cuts everywhere, which i gladly pick up. I hardly ever dig out full length straps.
Super shorties are good for dunnage walls, tarp tie downs, steel plate and dolla balla auto haula. Add 4 dogbone axle savers and 4 big hand ratchets, walla. Twice as strong as your twos and no wiggling underneath to hook for criss cross securement or ripping customer brakelines and abs wires.

Extra hand for feeding the fold. When not in use i clip it to the cupholder so my tallcan doesnt go flying during those routine east coast panic stops.

I raised my ride height so i can come out of any quarry washout with winches right over the top and never touch.
Yes, i find it less laborious to feed the fold than to straighten and fish 12 feet of strap through the slot. Whats the problem? -
