R.E. West uses both outward and inward facing cameras, and policy states you can only cover the inward facing when "off duty"

 

The story told to me was that recent huge judgements against carriers have shaken the insurance industry. As a result, insurers/reinsurers that cover these claims have dwindled in number and raised rates. Supposedly driver facing cameras are necessary to keep rates reasonable. Lloyd's of London was mentioned specifically as one of those passing these mandates.

Does anyone know if this is true? I mean, I'm sure the trend is real, but beyond that, I don't know.

Would the same issue affect small carriers as well as megas?

 

I know it is cheaper for the lawyers to find a driver not at fault if in fact they are not. Prior to driver facing cameras, lawyers would commonly subpoena cell phone records to prove or not prove the CMV driver was either texting or talking on cell phone when the incident/accident happened.
Something else to think about though, do the companies that use these have the driver sign a form stating the company can use the footage? If not can they legally? Just a thought.

 

I've often wondered how it would be legal to obtain, much less use any sort of recording (incident, a/v or otherwise) without a release.

 

Well, getting a job as a truck driver these days requires about as much paperwork as buying a car, so I'm sure that release is buried deep somewhere where most people don't look (or read).

 

I don’t know if it’s been said but Doug Andrus uses outward and inward facing cameras with mobileye. Add a GPS, the prepass, and all the toll systems, and the center of the windshield was crowded with junk. They made you sign paperwork stating the inner camera would only be looked at if the mobileye sensed an incident. Well the mobile eye would report that there was a crack in the road or the exit said 35mph while you were driving down the road. So I’m sure someone was watching the entire time I was sitting in the passenger seat.

 

I don't know to many drivers that get copies for their selves either.

 

Does the kag group use driver facing cameras?. Curious as it’s one place I’ve considered working at.
