This isn't really an update. Just a light hearted comment from what wisdom I might have. My signature phrase.

Someone once told me to be a trucker you have to love it, or be crazy.
I do it for both reasons.

You necromancers just fooled me into going through 6 pages of comments and thanking posts before i realized how old this thread was darnit lol. Well now that i’m here I think number one reason for quitting is the long hours. Number 2 reason is they don’t enjoy the lifestyle.

The reason new drivers quit is because of Coronavirus.

You know I'm really motivated to give this career a chance but what is putting me off is the chance of becoming stranded in a snow storm or getting that burned out feeling after driving 500 miles.. my question for all the truckers is.. does the pay really get better after that first year? I'm currently a custodian at a school (free benefits) and decent pay but I keep thinking about trucking.. I'm due to start Schneider next week but going will risk this custodial job. I don't know what to do. After four blocked toilets, including one who had the runs literally.. I'm ready for a career change. I guess I could always get another janitorial gig if SNI doesn't work out and I have to come back with my tail between my legs.

Pay after the first year goes up, if you are willing to make the effort to get it up. Most aren't and will spend their entire carriers at the crappy big box carriers, aka "megas". I'll never understand that, I guess it's cause it's easy and requires no effort to get hired. Those carriers are ALWAYS hiring. But for a guy with some experience and a clean license he can get a much better job with the ltl companies or even ups (the gold standard). But that requires knocking on doors and following up the application.

I started with Schneider and I think they are a good starter company. My attitude was to bust my butt and get expeience. I lived in the truck and rarely took hometime and I averaged $825 a week before taxes, which isn't great. But after working for them for over a year I was no longer willing to put up with their BS so I quit.
