I took a drive this last week from Colorado to Montana and back, it was the first time I drove a vehicle from this century, I found the screwy cruise control and radars plus lane departure very interesting. We got going, set the cruise to kind of the speed limit and the dang thing locks onto other vehicles and controls the speed. Does the junk work the same on big trucks? It would seem that if someone cut in front close the truck would slow down which on icy roads my thinking that could end in bad stuff.. I can see how that is moving towards vehicles being self driving and crashing.
Then on the cruise, it was like a different world Colorado to past Cheyenne, The drivers were way more polite and far apart, get back to Colorado and it is just get in line or drive like a miniac, which since I am a hillbilly it just does not compute.

I will refuse flat to drive a truck that makes decisions on power and braking. Just flat. ABS is fine traction control ok. But anything else is BS. Over engineered unmitigated BS.
I am paid not to crash the tractor trailer. Thats my job. And would you know it ice is one of my specialties. I have a reputation for going into ice storms that other drivers wont. -
Been out of trucking for a bit after a few decades of roaming the countries, took a break to be the watcher for a aged parent and always dream of going back...except from the changes I hear about electronic logs, auto shift, lane departure alarms and adaptive cruise, what do they need drivers for? holding that steering wheel?
x1Heavy Thanks this. -
Yes adaptive cruise works the same on big trucks... lane departure also beeps at you every time you cross a solid line without a turn signal on . Do it to many time and it sends a email to safety........
Auto braking yippee .......650cat425 Thanks this. -
Heck I just turned the music up louder and then that cars speedo said it can do 160, chicken on that one but at 75-80 on that trip that car got 39 mpg. 8 speeds with paddles, I was looking at them rivers to see if they would work. Then the lights, auto lights that dim when the car feels like it, that ain,t right.

They say all of that makes cars safer, but putting in a system that allows the driver not not pay attention to the road seems pretty stupid, to me. But what do I know. The only lane departure warning I've ever needed are the drunk bumps they put between the lanes.

They even have gyroscopes things in them to tell if your cornering too fast.....
650cat425 Thanks this. -
650cat425, x1Heavy and HoneyBadger67 Thank this.

You can turn all that crap off in a car. I've fiddled with a few rentals, even set up the adaptive cruise for the wife, played with lane assist, all that bs. I don't like any of it so I just turn it all off.
650cat425 Thanks this. -
Trucks don’t offer the turn off option......
