Never did it before, so not entirely certain what’s involved. Never touched internal parts much. Now, what about in frame vs an overhaul? My understanding is an overhaul around 750K is fairly typical. If there’s blow by or other cylinder issues by I can see over haul, but otherwise an in frame then?

Overhaul on a new emissions engine is more like under 500K miles......

    Brettj3876 and truckdriver31 Thank this.

I know with the full epa engines, complete dpf replacement seems to occurr around 300-450K or just after warranty runs out. Seems the big fleets dump the trucks off around that mileage. Same with preventative work on the egr and intake has recommended to be cleaned out something like 100-200K to keep the gunk out of the valve train. But, I intend to stay well clear of those.

You mention blow by as an overhaul thing. This website loves to say blow by means time for an overhaul. I don’t know of too many trucks that smoke out of tube. When the smoke is chugging like a freight train hitting the ground And oil on the ground, that’s a sure sign your motor is saying it needs help and it served its duty

Does not apply to 12.7 Detroit Diesel haha
They start blowing smoke out of the tube right after overhaul again

Funny thing, had a driver the other day go on by and was spraying smoke, oil and unburned fuel everywhere doing something like 80mph+. It was a mess on every other truck in his wake.

BTW, thanks for the input from everyone.

They all gotta breathe somewhat. No way to keep 100% seal of rings. Now if your sitting under a light pole at night and it looks like you're overheating from the excessive blow by then you have issues.

Less than 100k on inframe and after a hard pull i'll have a steady light haze come out of the tube. Don't have to ever add oil doing 12-15k changes

Yes I know the Detroit all too well. Blow by lets you know she’s a Detroit so it’s all good
