I plan on getting my Class A permit this week before signing up for school. Do I need to study all the endorsement sections just to get the permit for school? I would imagine I can study those before I get the license right or does it matter? Thanks!

Yes you have to study for all the endorsements you want for your permit. I have Hazmat, dbls, triples, and tanker endorsements. The only endorsement that is iffy to me is HazMat because of the backgound check that you have to pay. Here's something to think about, more endorsements make you more marketable.

I had to take general knowledge, combination vehicles and air brakes to get a permit. hazmat and double/triples came later.

In Colorado, you have to study the Commercial Driver's license manual and take a test before you can get your permit. The permit is just like when you get your regular license and a licensed Class A driver has to be with you in the seat closest to you when you drive. Some schools have a permit "prep" class for free. I would imagine most states follow this way?

I wonder if your general knowledge required the "pre-trip" procedures? Everyone has told me the pretrip is a big deal.

The way the manual reads, it sounds like a proper pre-trip inspection would take 2 hours!

You need to look in the cdl manual to see which endorsements require a road test. These are the ones you need so when you go for your cdl you will test on them. Air brakes is a road test item. You need to know the air brake test procedures. You have to take the test for combination vehicles so you can drive with the trailer.

The pre-trip is part of the road test, you have to be able to name the parts and say what you are looking for.

I have heard that some states require a road test for tank endorsement.

    Trekker1 Thanks this.

    Hello

The CDL Permit is usually obtained during school but can be obtained prior.

There are three sections of study for CDL Permits:

    1. General Knowledge

    2. Combination Vehicles

    3. Air Brakes

    After you obtain your permit
The pre-trip will be daily hands on training.
It should be taught and learned in a methodical way.

The same procedures every time you approach a truck to startup.

    Best of luck to you!!

Please start a thread about your school and the journey that you are starting.
There are other endorsements that you can possibly obtain:

    1. HazMats; transporting Hazardous Materials

    2. Doubles and Triples

    Trekker1 Thanks this.
