What's it like to deliver motor homes for a hotshot company?

Don't do it. Stop wondering about it. Find something else to do. No one is successful long term in that industry. I have seen plenty fail. Longest I have seen someone make it is 6 months.

 

Driver isn’t allowed to sleep in sleeper trucks with most drive away companies . I suspect it’s the same with a rv..

 

I've always heard it's a good job for a retired guy who needs something to do to keep busy, not earn a living.

To answer your questions, yes you generally need a CDL to do driveaway if it’s the larger stuff over 26k gvwr. Maybe not for the smaller stuff but that limits your work. Generally you are not allowed to sleep in the trucks or RV’s but I’m sure some get away with it. You’re supposed to get a hotel room. I honestly don’t see how that gets done without a small tow car to pull behind the delivered vehicle. Would be way too hard to get around otherwise. Doesn’t seem like a lot of fun to me and I know it don’t pay enough to make up for it.

Now doing towaway with your own truck is pretty fun actually during the fair weather months. Not a lot of money in that either but at least you’re in your own rig and most of those guys just sleep in the back of their crew cab. Sounds horrible but it’s actually pretty fun like I said when it’s not winter. Winter is not a good deal for that. Too dangerous pulling those little RV trailers around and you can be held liable for rock dings to the front of the trailer and whatnot. I did it for 6 months and I’d had plenty of trucking experience so it didn’t seem any different to me than running the road in a big truck. Same job. Had some bad luck mechanically and hung it up and went back to a local seasonal job for now but would do it again and just might. Yes you can make more money driving a truck at a company job if money is a big factor and everybody’s gotta do what they gotta do to pay the bills, but it’s a fun gig if you just like running the road without as much of the BS of typical force dispatch company jobs. You can pick your destinations, run paper logs, fix your truck up and just do your own thing.
