    Hello,

My wife's parents (65 and 85) are moving across the country from California (reno area) to Maine.
they are intent on trying to make the drive within the next week.

I am looking for any and all travel advice from the pros here, and any info you can give on what's open, what's not, where to stay and where to avoid would really be appreciated.

i believe they are taking I-70 east.

First question I have is where are they going to sleep. I believe all motels and hotels are shut down.

After that the only advice I have is dont. Their age, travel restrictions, and the possibilty of being stuck in the middle of no where are all very possible.

If they're in Reno, they're more likely taking I-80 which means they need to be extra-cautious driving across Wyoming due to the potential for bad weather and road conditions, particularly between Rawlins and Laramie.

Good point on the lodging concern.

Plan on 4-500 miles a day, rest or switch drivers as needed.

Go for a drive with them. Teach them how to stay with the flow of traffic and keep distance. The most stupid thing I see drivers do is pass trucks at 1 mph, exposing them to huge risks for far too long. Teach them how to mash on the gas and get around trucks, and find 'SAFE SPACE".

Don't get in front of trucks too quickly after passing. Again - leave lots of room.

The majority of trucks are governed. Mostly between 63-70 mph. If they keep their speed at about 65 mph, or match the speed of a governed truck and follow from a safe distance, they'll likely have minimal interaction with traffic.

It's coronavirus 101 all over again. The vast majority of the 35,000+ deaths on the road would be avoided if folks simply kept well away from another. Face it - apart from metropololitan areas - theres plenty of real estate on the roads. Yet dummies want to bunch together and play stupid games - winning stupid prizes.

He said "Reno area". You don't have to go very far west from Reno to be in California.

Forget it. Illinois is shut down. As is Jersey. More states are shutting down.

As in ALL NON ESSENTIAL everything except gas station and grocery store and pharmacy that's it.

Your Parents picked the absolute worst time to drive in a car to Maine cross country. Particularly if they came from a known Covid19 hotspot when they get there Maine intends to test the beejus out of them.

    There is no point.

We have shut down ourselves already. Arkansas can shut down anytime and we don't even notice. They are already in the process.
