I am going to shut down. As a car hauler there is still some work but its getting scarce and the prices aren't worth the risk.
How do I go about it?
I am currently out of FL. I also want to shut the company down and when I reopen it will be out of NY next time. I'll be moving back to NY and live with family to save on rent and other expenses.
Will I still get to keep my DOT/MC number if I open a new company in a different state?
How to temporarily shut down?

I had a dot number for a while and had it suspended. They told me it is mine for life will just have to pay fee to get it reactivated. Not sure about moving to a different state but would think it works same way

Don't do it, you will be shocked with your new insurance rate after reopening. Drop all the coverages except the liability just to keep the MC active. Talk to your agent about this first

You can call on Dealers while you are inactive. You have experience. You know the car lingo. Try connecting with people you know in the area in the car business. Ask your friends for people in the business. Who did they buy their car from? You already know how to operate through brokers. Make the best of your downtime.
24kHotshot Thanks this. -
Just a thought is you might want to keep your company based in FL because no state taxes and even though FL is crazy on insurance I'd bet NY is worse. -
I'll tell you what I have problems with.. for the life of me I can never get a auto broker to give me a rating on central.. I ask them if they'd give me a rating, I give them one in good faith and never do these ######## ever give you a rating... after 6 months I still only have like 2 #### ratings on central.. granted I mostly haul freight but I've worked with a good 20+ or so auto brokers...Last edited: Apr 5, 2020
