TSMT hauled ammunition out of Indiana a lot. I think that plant is shuttered now. Used to see them around Ravenna Ohio too. That unloading crane setup has also been used by glass haulers to unload large crates of glass at building sites. The arms were hinged and folded back in along the wall of trailer with rails running length of trailer

I believe picture was taken around 75-76. Truck is a late 60’s White Freightliner.
I like the gun ports, would have been great for running Hunts Point.

Did anyone notice the tube type tires on “tractor” wheels. They were used because they were much easier to change with hand tools.
Notice the crane trailer in the background?

Tube type were not easier to change I don’t know who lied to you ,plus the ring could come off and take your head with it .really we didn’t start running tubeless till about 1980

I used to run a crane trailer when I ran on the HVP (electronics) fleet for North American Van Lines. Crane could lift 8000 lbs. Probably more than that but 8000 was the rated capacity.

I believe he was referring to the Dayton style wheel versus budd. Less lugs, lower torque etc.

Oh yes thank you I can see that now we never had Dayton wheels so didn’t have much experience with them!

Dayton wheels were easier to change than Buds with 2 piece lugs, but on drives if not tight they could slip and cut off the valve stem,
When tubeless tires came out no one wanted Change them because of problems seating the beads, now no one will fix a split rim.

We used ether to seat the beads on tubeless. Biggest problem just changing a Dayton, was not to take the nuts off all the way. I've seen lugs fly across the shop.

Oh god. make it stop. I spent almost a year in one of those older frightliners. And yes we had those durn bingo cards. The only qualification DOT needed was a set of biofocals glasses to read them little bitty numbers on all of them.

    =)

Yes those days were VERY simple. You have 6 days to be somewhere, call when empty. Don't bother us unless you broke the truck.

    650cat425 Thanks this.

I fiddled with a crane twice in my lifetime out of necessity. Find which lever makes go up. And find the other way to make it go down.

I am not a crane man. Off the flatbed, put it here. Not there I said here, what part of here don't you understand you deaf or something?

Why yes (And show the hearingaids...)

OMFG... Get out of there. =)

Things like that tend to have very short careers in my book. Maybe 20 minutes all done. But we got the items off the flatbed which was what mattered. Why couldnt THEY get in there and do it I don't know. But after I showed the hearingaids, you bet 5 showed up to run the thing properly.

I turned out to be a way better front end loader than a crane man.
