My experience with the PC Miler Navigator 440 GPS unit

    Just bought one today ($320 tax and all at a Pilot)...

    I've had CoPilot 9 Truck on my laptop since it first came out and I have been VERY pleased with its performance...But, it has taken a toll on my laptop (running almost constantly...falling out of the passenger seat, etc.).

    I have done my home work...and I decided on the 440 because of price versus performance. The others had a few extra features (that I would never use) like Bluetooth connectivity and all that...not my style.

    I will give an honest review of it here over the next couple of weeks...

    So far (only 150 miles) it has done just fine...its not quite as good as the laptop versions, but I expected that (a lot less "computer power" behind it).

    I've been playing around with it setting routing profiles (short, practical, no tolls, and empty...my old stand by's) and getting familiar with it...I think I'm gonna like it.

    So far so good...

    All I had to go on was an address to a jobsite (church in Lorain, OH), no phone number for backup, no QC directions from my company....it led me right in there.

    I missed the first exit off the turnpike on purpose...it rerouted to the next exit in about 2 seconds.

    ETA: Its loads like this (no directions, no phone number) that make GPS units useful and time saving tools...when they are used properly.

    From Lorain, OH I went to the Pilot in Avon, OH...picked the Pilot out of the POI's listed on the GPS and away I went.

    It led me to the Exit (151 off of I90 east) but wanted me to turn right at the end of the ramp....you have to turn left to get to the Pilot there. I knew that already, been there before so it was no big deal...just an example of why you have to pay attention and not just blindly follow the GPS. (I wondered if I had punched in the address to the Pilot would it have led me the right way...but don't know)

    From there I went to pick up a load in Bedford Heights, OH...punched in the address and away I went, it led me right in there.

    Load wasn't ready (ain't we all heard that before), no place to park on site. I pulled up the POI's again...Pilot on Richfield, OH was the closest sure bet for parking, it led me right in there.

    So far so good...

    Obviously the GPS coordinates for that Pilot loaded in the 440 are wrong. It’s a good thing you are not a new driver. A new driver without previous experience might have turned right and then might have ended up in a residential area or at a low clearance, restricted route, or worse. Not to mention the inconvenience of having to drive down unfamiliar roads to find a place to turn a 73-foot vehicle around legally.

    No big deal to you an experienced driver, but to a newbie driver, it could have been a major catastrophe.

    I see your point, and it is a valid point...but that big Pilot sign is hard to miss, plus the little blue highway signs that tell you which direction those places are at.

    We gotta pay attention and not just blindly follow these things because NONE OF THEM ARE PERFECT. (I'm gonna repeat that a few times during this review)

    I'm back at the previously mentioned shipper in Bedford Heights, OH...no issues getting back here (unless you want to count traffic at 5 pm).

    Heading home for the weekend from here...(just left home Teusday, but its been a slow week, may as well go back home)

    I agree but not all truck stop signs are so palpable and a lot of times those little blue highway signs are absent. I know when I first started driving, I made it a rule whereby if I reached the end of an exit and I could not see the Truck Stop or any signs indicating which way to turn to go to the truck stop, I went through the exit to the next truck stop because I didn’t want to take a chance that I would guess wrong and then would have to find a place to turn my truck around legally.

    I agree.

    I have co pilot on a netboook 275.00 , mounted on a ram mount stand by the jumpseat, 125.00 for co pilot plus I use my netbook for other computing needs. personally I dont think new drivers should use them, without other common map/applications

    Another thing that deserves "honorable mention"...

    Exit ramps...some are left, most are right lane. But with ongoing construction no GPS unit could ever stay up to date more than a couple of months at best.

    That is just something that we all are going to have to live with...sometimes the GPS will be wrong.

    Made it home...GPS still doing its job nicely.

    I'm gonna spend the next 2 days "laid up here in a country state of mind". (fishin)
