It depends how much money he has to gamble with and potentially lose. There is a deepening economic slump out in front of us...things aren't going to go back to normal and be hunky dory and coochie-coo a year from now IMO. If he has the start up capital to go buy a flatbed trailer and a truck to pull it around with for cash, then start the insurance and do all the paperwork, then go haul a bunch of stingy load-board freight and see if he can keep his head above water, then by all means your destiny awaits. If RV's were still hot like they were just a couple years ago I'd probably set up a payment plan on a new Shipshewanna trailer and get to it, but at this point I know better than to do something like that. That will have to wait.

 

I own all my equipment outright & I'm already worried..

 

That cash goes fast.. trust me I know from experience. I funded my MC roughly 7 months ago with my cash on everything but my trailer and let me tell you that savings goes fast if you aren't recouping it.. My only advantage is yes I can go out and run for $1.20/mile if I have to and skimp by.. So far I've chosen not to do that but rather try to wait out the bad freight market.. but those insurance payments keep coming..

I can not imagine going off the load board now guys. I am blessed to have the opportunity I have. They are my normal freight and I an picking up more because LTL companies are not doing what they normally do. I have not got a call or email about anything today so I did some yard work. I am concerned about not restarting the economy, we will all be in the poor house.

 

I don't think there is anyone who doesn't want to restart the economy. The problem is the virus is very real. When talking about re-opening the economy what you need to look at is who is open right now because they are "essential" and what are they dealing with.

I can tell you right now 3 days ago a Walmart in Aurora, CO had to close because their employees kept getting sick. Tyson just annoyed yesterday that they believe food chain is in jeopardy.. Why? Because they can't stop their employees from getting sick and those who aren't sick have started calling out because they don't want to get sick. Tyson just shut down a facility in MD.

There has been several other meat processing facilities who have been forced to shut down not because of stay at home orders but because they don't have the employees to stay open. North Dakota I think it is has 130ish people from one facility that are sick with CV.

This is the problem.. we are not in control of this situation all we can do is mitigate the damage. You don't have a fire in your house and say.. hey only half of it's burning so I'm fine if I stay in the other half, I'll just toss some plywood on the holes as the fire burns through... No you put the fire out before trying to rebuild..

The simple facts are that just about every country who is now starting to open up stayed locked down for roughly 2.5 months.. That's about the average..

It's not about what I want, you want or anyone else. It's about what we have to do, because it's pretty clear that large employers can't stay open in many cases. You can't reopen a economy with out workers. If you open up now they will be the case but 10 times fold..

 

Our reaction is killing us.

 

Average age of CV death in Italy 78. They were not contributing to the economy anyway. Okay maybe a few of them still were...not trying to be a jerk about it I swear. It's just facts are what they are.

 

Well it's kind of what always happens in a downturn I guess. The best capitalized and lowest overhead players stick around and the guys with boat payments have the bank come looking for everything sooner or later. Hopefully that is not your truck or trailer if you need those to make a living.

 

Been around a long time and seen a lot, much longer than I should've been allowed to be. I'm not a gambling man, but if I was, I'd put my money on both you & @singlescrewshaker coming through mess unscathed. Keep your heads up fellas, you both got what it takes, common sense and a "can do" outlook, truck on....
