I live in NY and want to get my CDL. We may be the last state in the union to open and all the state DMV offices are closed. The big problem I see is that most out of state driving schools require you to get your Permit before you go to their school.. Is there anyway around this? I think its called the non-domicile rule???? Help please.....

Call the ones you're interested in and ask.
Some may have something worked out to get the permit in the same state the school is in.

So you live in NY and you're going to a school in another state, correct? If you're driving there or they're going to bus you there, see if you can't get there a few days early. As soon as you get there, go to the DMV and switch your license to the state you're training in. Then take the CLP tests (usually score immediately and they had you tour permit right there). As an address, ask the school if you can use theirs. If not, just use the Motel address (but don't put something like Red Roof Inn, 123 Main St... etc) and use your room number like it's an apartment number. Bunch of members here can tell you how to set up an address outside of your home state. Hope things work out.

Are you gong to a private cdl school or a trucking company cdl school?
Are you going to move from NY permanently?
East to switch domicile and drivers license in South Dakota. All you need is a PO Box.

I just want to get my CDL before the end of the year. I had a job working in nursing homes and it looks like that will not be an option going forward, so sitting on my ### at home is not my style... I was a fireman for 35 years. I drove big fire engines and Ladders all my life. But in NY firefighters are exempt from needing a CDL, So I can drive big stuff, been on trucks that required double clutching (not syncro) as well as split rear ends .... I am really good with mirrors..... After my Job in the FD ( I retired 5 years ago) I was traveling all over the country teaching fire safety to the staff in nursing homes and hospitals.. Out of town and on the road two to three weeks a month! OTR Trucking seams like a perfect fit for me..... I have never worked less then 60-70 hours week in all of my life!!!! I just want to get it started sooner rather later. Who knows when NY's Nut job of a Governor will let the states offices to open!!!!

Take a look at Wilson Logistics. This company hires from 48 states and their schools are in Memphis, TN and Missoula, Montana.

Wilson Logistics & Jim Palmer Trucking are two of the better starting companies. They follow a new driver program that is a copy of Prime, Inc. The WL/JPT school in Missoula, MT often has 5 or less students at a time. Prime, WL/JPT probably havebthe best training for newbies. It's also longer than most. If your trainer sees you are ready for the next step they can recommend you move to the next level.

I almost worked for Jim Palmer but they didn't give me proper credit for my past experience and I didn'tvwant to ride with a trainer for a month or two after 20 years of CDL driving, so I passed on them.

I thought WL/JPT & Prime, inc just had thec2 schools in Springfield, MO & Missoula, MT. I didn't know about Memphis.
