I'm not positive, haven't actually worked for an LTL despite trying foe a while, but have been an applicant for many of the companies in the southwest and so I paid attention to their equipment on the road.

Estes West in particular was using TLI to run doubles, my guess is they weren't peddling or interlining with those lease/purchase sleeper cabs, guessing on the L/P because they advertised heavily on Craigslist for L/P drivers in AZ during that time. Not seeing those as much since the management changes have happened in PHX, and the ads are gone as well.

Used to see the NPT guys working around Rock Springs, the trucks looked stripped down like the CF cabs used to. Interesting from the outside in a nuts and bolts kinda way, not sure I'd want to work there.

Also, have not seen any Reddaway sets being pulled by contractors, but have seen very few YRC sets behind the wrong cab.

They tell us that they only use contractors for freight imbalances, but that’s only true some of the time. They’ll cancel a bid run and send a contractor instead without a second thought. I suspect they do it because it’s cheaper and quicker for long distances with a team truck.

I'm under the impression that a lot of times the planners would have to use the contractors because there is some minimum levels of freight to run to get the negotiated freight rates.

I worked a short time for a interline carrier Speedy and this is the best way I can explain it, now keep in mind this was almost 18 years ago and it was before having hand helds and we actually delivered off of paper bill of ladings, but basically as a interline carrier your majority customer base are other carriers, not customers in the traditional sense, although it is possible to have a couple of your own customers the bulk of your business is from other carriers, the main thing was is that you deliver off of the bill of lading of the carrier you were delivering for, so as a example, even though I worked for MGL trucking the bill of ladings and the freight I delivered was Saia, ABF, USF Bestway, G.I. trucking, Matheson Fast Freight, Dats ect and ect, on rare occasions I would have a piece of frieght that was on a MGL bill, meaning MGL actually picked that freight up and made the final delivery, but in most cases most the freight was from other carriers, it was freight that they picked up and hauled across the country, but they just didn't service those final destination areas, that's where interline carriers come in at, although not common we also did pickups for them in those areas if requested.

One thing I forgot Speedy, another carrier I worked for Anderson and Sons trucking Reno ,Nv was sort of interline also, the difference was though compared to MGL they were considerably bigger, they serviced California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Colorado, they handled mostly their own freight on their bols, but they also handled interline as well, they did a lot of interline for Yellow in particular, before the whole YRC thing and the mergers.

@USMC 3531 man I didnt know anderson and sons serviced all the way to California, unless were talking about different Anderson and sons. Here in texas they were bought out by old dominion when OD first arrived in texas.(1996 or 1997)

The only reason I remeber because we have a driver who worked for Anderson and sons. once odfl bought them out he came to OD as a linehaul driver and hes the number 1 driver as far as seniority.

I can't answer positively if it was the same company or not, because Anderson and sons did expand and contract over the years, I know the one I worked for was head quartered in Reno, Nv and owned by a man named Jimmy Anderson Sr., this was in 1999, it's possible that maybe Jimmy sold a partial portion of it to OD maybe, but I am not sure, I do know that the Anderson family did fold the whole company around the 2000 or 2001 time frame and went out of business, and that Jimmy Jr. one of the sons founded another smaller interline company called Express It, which ran for a couple years, but that business went away as well.

I pedal milk and we lost all the schools because of this. Lost a ton of business there. We are dead right now. I'm getting laid off soon. Will see if I get a call back at some point but I will be looking for a different job in the instance that I dont get called back.
