I’m in North Idaho. I just purchased an old California transfer set(Dump truck and trailer). It was a CARB victim that was too cheap to pass up. The plan for now is use it for work on my own property. Hauling loads to dump, bringing in gravel for driveways, etc. Then in a year or 2 I might try to flip it for a profit.

My question is about getting it legal to use to go to the local quarries to pick up loads I will be using on my personal property. First off, I’ve had a Class A with all endorsements since 1999. So that’s a non-issue. And I have a valid medical card. I’m assuming I can just register it and get liability insurance? Is there anything else for personal use? If I ever want to cross state lines, does that change requirements? It would be to pick up loads of rock for personal use, not business related.

CARB and the DMV are two separate entities. So if the DMV lets you register it you’re good to go.

I’m in Idaho. No CARB here. Just wondering the minimum requirements for personal use.

You own it you can drive it around as personal use and even go to church in it all you want. You set your own policy on that not the government. If You are not using it to make money from someone else it is considered not for hire. You are log exempt because it is your personal property being moved around wihin 150 air miles. If you haul a load for a friend or neighbor keep that on the down low. Lol!

We think alike! So distance or crossing state lines doesn’t change anything?

Register it for no more than you need to carry. If you only need 60,000 gross instead of 80,000 do that to save you money and taxes. Liabilty insurance is all you need. Gulfway insurance out of Florida is a good source to get full coverage on whatever you wanna value the truck at and they are reasonable. You can set your own value of what you think its worth like if you payed $20,000 you can value it at that or $25,000 to recoup a little loss or less. It is your call. Good company. I’ve used them for 20 years on all my classics.

I’ve gone all over the country to ATHS truck shows no problem. Pulling my own trailers with my own stuff on them. I’ve even got 3 trucks registered for 26,000 to stay under CDL requirement and pull trailers around for the heck of it because I can. Lol!

What you’re telling me is matching what I have found. But it seems like there’s a lot of guys that are so intimidated by the govt. they comply with rules they don’t need to just to be “safe”. I’m not like that, and I very much appreciate you giving me the honest advice. Thank you

It’s because 99% of law enforcment doesn’t know you can do this. There are so many great laws for the antique/classic car/truck enthusiast/hobbiest to do cool stuff that nobody understands. I carry the regs in all the trucks and cars to settle any questions with ignorant Leo’s. Had TxDps diesel trooper hand wrote some of their inside regs numbers down for me once after he had to be educated on my legitimacy. He was cool told me keep this in truck so the next guy don’t have to call his supervisor for it. Lol. We've had some great legislators in the past who were/are auto/truck enthusiasts who passed some fantastic laws for us that allows us to play responsibly.

Hauling your own stuff for your own property you should be able to buy a regular county tag and just up the gvw on the registration.

Basically you are the same as any farm truck out on the road. You can haul stuff to and from your own property as much as you want.

Under 55000# and you are exempt from FHUT. should be a non-issue 'cept some states are anal about registering stuff GVWR over 55K without the Fed HUT papers...
