Hi I’m Jerry Franklin with nwa transport I run the shop with a fleet of about 10 trucks all gliders with 3406e cat. I’ve been having some big issues with power steering. I know of 4 of our trucks that have lost power steering all together and had to be fixed out on the road. Expensive every time but even after they have been fixed on the road it only seems to last about a month after a new pump was installed. I’m seriously about to loose my job over this. When I change the pump I replace the filter every time and clean resivor. When I get the new pump installed I fill the system to the cold mark and jack the front of the truck till almost both tires are off the ground at least one is off the ground. I then crank the truck re check fluid level then turn the wheel 5-10 times lock to lock. Untill there are no bubbles in resivor and level is full. Am I doing this correctly I’ve been doing it this way for a long time and am just recently having issues

@pushbroom @Goodysnap @spsauerland so it’s been pump failure every time? What are you using for fluid? How hot is the fluid getting? Hopefully some of those I tagged will be along shortly.

Would be nice to know model of truck. A lot of the time a bad u joint or spine shaft is problem not the pump or steering box

They are 389 peterbilt the reason I’ve been replacing the pumps is before they go out it will whine really bad then no power steering.

Only asking are you using OEM pumps not aftermarket. So much of this rebuild stuff and off brands parts just don't cut it. Not saying any of this is the cause only suggesting.

Talk to the OEM, you might have the pump geared wrong and your running it too fast.

Also you could have steering box issues eating up the new pumps.
This could even be the problem why the original pumps failed.

How would a ground strap help?

That normally melts the hi psi line.

But till he comes back with a better explanation anything is possible.
