So I have my CDL but am a functionally incompetent trucker. Now what?

Thank you! I was a nursing student up until being a trucking student so all my hard work and study skills font apply. It’s very different. People keep saying “stop taking notes. Just back. Back more. Go faster.” Gah. I’m literally less nervous around dying patients than parking spots. Give me sepsis or an arterial bleed, yup I’m good. But straightlining hurts all the feels. But I’ll just do it until I can do it. Which is weird. And kinda awesome

I avoid backing so my nominal skills became incompetent areas. I’m out of practice and I wasn’t a pro. Thanks for showing it can be done. And I’m sorry for your loss. You are truly a boss. Respect

    Rocks Thanks this.

    1) you stand a good chance to re-injure your back, always bend at the knees to lift, by using your legs.

    2) you are not bad at any of this, you are a student, and in fact, even at my 48 years, i was still learning.

    3) DO NOT QUIT, keep at it. quitting is the easy way out, rather than working thru the problems

    4) you can always ask for help, like someone to watch you/guide you, (that's called spotting the driver) but to NEVER do the backing for you.

he means a job as a yardman. you stay in the yard, backing trailers with a yard horse. actually, that job can pay well, hourly and no road traffic to deal with. i did that work, and loved it, till the company went out of business, then i went back on the road.

Very true. My back actually hurts less in trucking. Truck parts beat the heck out of lifting morbidly obese patients by yourself.

So I have a question. When you are through with your trainer and on your own. How do you square it with your ELD and hos when you're practicing? Also how do you find the hours to do it between loads. I want to know so I can make sure to become a good backer when I'm out on the road

I’m definitely wrong about this. Start your post trip when you start backing but do it when completely stopped. Then stop if you are taking to long and switch to sleeper. Stay under 5 mph. And when just practicing use personal conveyance yard move
