How risky is it to run a full length truck on 101 south from Eureka to Bay Area?

I.E. how heavily do they enforce the 65 foot limit thing?

I'm in Eureka right now. Took the 299 from Redding, allegedly the only legal route, and it was a major PITA, even while empty. Not looking forward to doing it again with 44000 lb.

Curious. Are you asking on an open forum where carriers read threads how to run a non-truck approved route?

I was nailed for that back in 2011 in NorCal so yeah they do enforce it. I was new and didn't know but that didn't stop me getting cited for it. I was running 395 south and cut across that road between Standish and Buntingville trying to get to Reno. Apparently it's a shortcut they catch trucks running across all the time.

Don't plan ever getting away with anything in Commiefornia. They need $$$ for all the Communism.

Here's what someone who lives in the area has to say...

And yeah, thinking you're going to sneak through is a fool's bet.

Eh, kinda figured. It was just wishful thinking on my part. Gonna have to take that 299 back out, and it's gonna be majorly annoying.

I've only been as far north as Ukiah/Redwood Valley on 101 and then cut east on 20 back to I-5. Don't remember any length issues down there.

There's a business in Redway and Garberville that specializes in hauling long loads through Richardson's grove the tight spot south of Benbow on 101. Used to be a cabover with a tall guy named Danny running it. Maybe call Redwood towing to ask. (707) 923-3440

I was up out of Willits one time to load cattle. 280” wheelbase and 52ft spread axle trailer. I was a little nervous because we’ve all heard the stories. But I made it up and back. They didn’t cut my trailer up or ship it out on a rail car.

That being said, in the spring they tend to turn a blind eye to big trucks and long trailers out there because they know the cattle have to get out.
