Too much oil can be bad too?

Add a quart or two at a time until you figure out what the dipstick is telling you. As far as how much is too much, I’m assuming that would vary by engine. The results of too much oil are usually referred to as hydro lock. Look it up.

 

Too much oil can cause damage to the front and rear main seal. And now, you have an oil leak. Way too much oil can push the main seals out and now you have a MAJOR oil leak.

 

Not meaning to correct you, but a hydro lock is when you get water/coolant in the combustion chamber (on the top of the piston). Water cannot be compressed and so it will stop (or lock up) the engine. This can (not always) either bend or break a connecting rod, or send the piston and rod through the side of the engine block.

 

Your fine in this situation driver.. Part of the issue with too much oil is the crank starts hitting the oil in the pan and starts throwing excessive amounts onto the cylinder walls . Some of this excess oil gets past the rings and causes dpf issues.

 

Can also cause the oil to "churn" and become frothy.

 

Most truck engines require 1 gallon to fill to the full mark when the oil level shows at the bottom of the hash marks on the dipstick.

 

Wouldn't even worry about top up until the level was 1/4 the way up the safe range.

 

Can be oil too.I ve seen it several times.

 

It'd take a lot of oil in the crankcase to hydrolock an engine.

Christmas break 10 years ago. Its -35 to -40 out. Management told all the drivers to leave the trucks running at elevated idle in the yard over the holidays so they'd be good to go. One moron left the truck idle the whole time. Show up at work after the holidays and first job on my list was to check fluids and throw a couple gallons of fuel in if needed. Get to one truck and its bucking away. Hop up in the cab. Barely 5 PSI on the oil pressure gauge. Shut it down and I #### you folks not I couldn't find the level on the dipstick. The oil was so dilluted with fuel the level had risen about a foot on the stick. I fired it up and put it straight in the shop. Most C12 CATs in the fleet took around 36L of oil. I filled up nearly 2 and a half 50L drain pans with oil/fuel from that engine. Never hydrolocked.
